Chateau de Saumur, Saumur

Like most châteaux, the Chateau de Saumur has exchanged hands many times in its long life, but fortunately its last stop is a museum. This mammoth of an estate is exactly what your imagination would conjure in your dreams of chateaux: the triumphant spires slicing the sky like victorious swords, the white limestone (tuffeau) sitting one on top of the other, refusing to give way no matter how many hundreds of years pass.

Once you’re up the stairs and through the door of the chateau, you’ll gain access to three different museums: the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Museum of the Horse, and the Museum of Toy Figurines. These oddities are just icing on the cake, because the real pleasure is the stroll through royal grounds and the view of the château itself from a distance: it is a living fairytale. Chateau de Saumur is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Saumur Edition.

  • The chateau is current being repaired. Website didn’t have enough information. The panoramic point had human feces everywhere. Perhaps the castle should care for cleanliness...  more »

  • Beautiful chateau set high on top of a cliff overlooking the town of Saumur. Reasonable admission rates, excellent views out over the Loire. Unfortunately when we visited it was undergoing some restoration work and parts of it were out of bounds. I'm sure that it will be even more magnificent when the work is completed. Still worth a visit.
  • Beautiful spot! Amazing restaurants and shops all around. Make this a stop if you are touring through France.
  • I went during the winter, before the 31st of March so the Chateau was closed, so take that into account t when visiting. The trip was still worth it because you can still climb to where the Castel stands and explore it's sorroundings, and that vantage point offers the best possible view of the city along with the river.
  • Beautiful and well worth seeing. It was closed as we were there but was worth the drive.
  • An interesting and historic Château undergoing substantial refurbishment perched high above the town of Saumur with superb views over both the town and the Loire river. The entry fee of 6 euro reflects that it is a work in progress but it still has much to offer its visitors with interesting exhibits in all of the rooms that have been reopened to the public. Helpful staff, many of whom speak English, are on hand to enhance your visit. Some areas have disabled access but not all at this time. Well worth the visit for the views alone.
