Chateau de Saumur, Saumur

(800+ reviews on the web)
Castle
Like most châteaux, the Chateau de Saumur has exchanged hands many times in its long life, but fortunately its last stop is a museum. This mammoth of an estate is exactly what your imagination would conjure in your dreams of chateaux: the triumphant spires slicing the sky like victorious swords, the white limestone (tuffeau) sitting one on top of the other, refusing to give way no matter how many hundreds of years pass.

Once you’re up the stairs and through the door of the chateau, you’ll gain access to three different museums: the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Museum of the Horse, and the Museum of Toy Figurines. These oddities are just icing on the cake, because the real pleasure is the stroll through royal grounds and the view of the château itself from a distance: it is a living fairytale. • Excellent friendly staff and present but little to see in fine. An incomprehensible scenography in sub soil. A bit excessive anyway in terms of price.

  • Great chateau- easily accessible by foot from the town centre (though can drive there we didn't) meander up through the old town to come out to amazing views along La Loire. Perfect size for a morning...  more »
  • Perfect Castle. Has even events in the summer. Also in the evening an eye-catcher, as perfectly lit.

  • Great views looking out over the city. While I was there in Sept '16 the place was under major renovation. Not a lot to see inside it. Probably a lot of the rooms closed off due to the renovation. Would go back when all renovation is complete.
  • Stunning exterior to this château. It is very fairy-tale in its appearance. Perched on the hill as it is provides commanding views over the town of Saumur and the river Loire. The interior houses some fine tapestries and dinnerware, but not much else. It doesn't take more than about 30 minutes to comprehensively 'do' the inside, so a little disappointing. However, it's not expensive (6€ for adults and the kids went free), so pretty good value. If you want to buy your child a sword and shield, don't make my mistake of buying in the gift shop - go down into the town where they're literally half the price!
  • Looks great from outside but we could not get in on that day...
  • The Loire and castles! It is under renovation and though lot of construction structures you can admire this nice castle. Like all these one in the Loire they have been through so many phases that better taking a guide tour.
  • Great views, though the castle itself was a bit underwelming. It is going through a major restoration/renovation so it should be much improved in the next few years.
