Chateau de Saumur, Saumur

Like most châteaux, the Chateau de Saumur has exchanged hands many times in its long life, but fortunately its last stop is a museum. This mammoth of an estate is exactly what your imagination would conjure in your dreams of chateaux: the triumphant spires slicing the sky like victorious swords, the white limestone (tuffeau) sitting one on top of the other, refusing to give way no matter how many hundreds of years pass.

Once you’re up the stairs and through the door of the chateau, you’ll gain access to three different museums: the Museum of Decorative Arts, the Museum of the Horse, and the Museum of Toy Figurines. These oddities are just icing on the cake, because the real pleasure is the stroll through royal grounds and the view of the château itself from a distance: it is a living fairytale. Chateau de Saumur is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Saumur Edition.

  • An interesting and historic Château undergoing substantial refurbishment perched high above the town of Saumur with superb views over both the town and the Loire river. The entry fee of 6 euro reflects that it is a work in progress but it still has much to offer its visitors with interesting exhibits in all of the rooms that have been reopened to the public. Helpful staff, many of whom speak English, are on hand to enhance your visit. Some areas have disabled access but not all at this time. Well worth the visit for the views alone.
  • Lovely chateau, being skilfully restored. Not a huge amount of rooms open, but fabulous views over Saumur and knowledgeable guides with good English.
  • Didn't go inside as there was a festival in the grounds. We were tasting the local wine instead.
  • Nice views from the town and area. But currently under renovation (July 2017)
  • Great views looking out over the city. While I was there in Sept '16 the place was under major renovation. Not a lot to see inside it. Probably a lot of the rooms closed off due to the renovation. Would go back when all renovation is complete.
