Caves Louis de Grenelle, Saumur

4.9
#1 of 13 in Wineries in Pays de la Loire
Taste a little sparkle--sparkling wine, that is--in a 15th-century limestone quarry at Caves Louis de Grenelle. The tuffeau limestone mined by prisoners of war provided the material that built many châteaux and houses in the Loire Valley. However, once the houses were built and the prisoners released, it was time to celebrate with a little bubbly; and that’s exactly what Louis de Grenelle and his family did. The caves are now used to age the precious grape essence in perfect atmospheric conditions. See bottles lining the chalky walls, waiting for their time to shine. The winery is still owned and managed by the family of Louis de Grenelle, who follow time-honored methods of fermentation established in 1859 by Louis himself. A very beautiful story of family being told told by an enthusiast. We have rediscovered the traditional winemaking. Well done and personalized tasting enabled us to purchase wines to our liking. I recommend!

Visit to the very affordable rate: 2.50euros and very interesting. In 30 minutes our guide knew we gave the explanations necessary for the production of sparkling wine of the House. Perfect for people just introduced to the Winery as we. The tasting is well done and allowed us to discover a sparkling amazing. Delighted with this visit

Really enjoyed our visit today. Our guide Thomas give us a great tour - very informative. The tasting as the end was good .... no pressure, but the products sold themselves and of course we had to buy a few souvenirs 🥂🍷🍾🥂 Excellant value. Would highly recommend a visit.

I have recommended this cave to so many friends now, I may as well add a review here. The tour of the cellar was interesting and informative even for the children, and the tasting afterward was unique. It culminated in a sparkling red wine (it would be a Red Champagne if the name were not restricted) that is very special; worth a visit for that alone. And the chateau at the top of the hill is a good place to walk off the effects!
