No explanation. Apart from the point of view on the cited historical there is very little interest. Not essential.

Sarlat-La-Canéda is a very special location, a superior beauty. The best place to visit is La place du Peyrou, at the foot of the Cathedral of St-Sacerdos, meters above this point stands a curious cylindrical Romanesque Tower and conical roof which is known as the mysterious Lanterne des Morts. Lantern of the dead is called an Aedicule, usually as a hollow and completed Tower in an openwork Pavilion. Ordinarily it was intended to serve as a guard in the cemeteries and sometimes also served to indicate far buildings or religious sites. In the 14th century lanterns of the dead continued affecting the shape of columns and were isolated, although they were later replaced by openwork chapels that served as shelter to a lamp that was always on. This is a good example. And it is worth reaching this lantern, because this city will feel very alive.
