Chateau de Puymartin, Sarlat-la-Caneda

Take a guided tour through Chateau de Puymartin, a castle originally built in the 13th century. Access is by tour only, and you'll get a thorough explanation of sumptuous tapestries, antiques, and other curios housed within. The property was enlarged in 1450 and restored in the 19th century, remaining in the hands of the Saint-Clar family until the 18th century, when it was abandoned--although some say one of the Saint-Clars never left. Legend has it that 16th-century occupant Teresa Saint-Clar roams the ramparts of the castle at night. Teresa was surprised with her lover by her husband, and as punishment was imprisoned in a small room in the tower for 15 years. The story goes that upon his death, she was walled into the room. Guided tours are in French only, but an informational brochure is available in English. • A Château largely restore in the nineteenth century by the historical family of the founders. So you can see the furniture, tapestries and paintings property of the family of Montbron. You can either do the tour solo with a small explanatory booklet (but you can see the original mythological cabinet which is seen only with a guide) this is a good time to spend in the past!

  • Admire it from the outside is dazzling with its beauty and see it on the inside makes you a little part of its history, with legend included.

  • Very beautiful, both inside and outside. Even without a guide, the brochure given to the Fund allows a very informative visit. The gardens, on the other hand, are very average.

  • We have been a week ago. It's beautiful. Furnished and well maintained. I highly recommend it. Not you can stroll through the gardens without input.

  • Lovely castle with beautiful pieces furnished by the ever-present chatelains. Do with the guided tour: we were lucky to have Sarah very dynamic and didactic guide...

  • The guide says the history of the castle with a lot of realism. We are blown away by the place. A must see

  • Very disappointed with the visit. Only 1 third of the castle to visit and not the better level architecture. Outwardly beautiful with its surroundings

Where to stay in Sarlat-la-Caneda

Chances are good that if you stay in Sarlat-la-Caneda, you'll be housed in a historical building. Many hotels and other lodgings in this medieval capital are in old mansions and structures that have existed for many centuries. While the range of choices does include a few more modern hotels, most are beautiful family-owned spots where you might expect to eat meals with the owners. It's hard to go wrong in terms of location, but staying close to the historical center is best. Also, take note that hotels in this region tend to fill up quickly in the summer, so be sure to book before you arrive.
