Chateau de Saissac, Saissac

3.7
The Château de Saissac is a ruined castle, one of the so-called Cathar castles, in the southernmost tip of the commune of Saissac in the Aude département in the north-west of Carcassonne, France. It was once the residence of the powerful vassal family of Trencavel. Today the ruins are protected as official historical monuments of France (link=no).HistoryThe castle dominates the rocky headland and the ravine of Vernassonne, at an important strategic position at the entry of the Montagne noire. Based on historical texts, it can be dated to at least 960. It was bequeathed by the bishop of Toulouse to the Count of Carcassonne. In the 11th century, the castle was pledged to powerful vassals in the country. They formed a junior branch under the counts of Foix who formed at the time the lineage of Saissac. It is important all the same to note the presence of a castrum under the current caste, probably dating from the 11th century, though its origin can date to the time of the Visigoths. At the time of the Albigensian Crusade in 1229, the lord of Saissac, Bertrand de Saissac, himself a Cathar, was the tutor of Raymond Roger de Trencavel. They were subjugated and stripped of their titles. Bouchard de Marly ordered the seizing of the castle and its goods; it was only later, after 1234, that the castle was restored by Lambert de Thursey, another companion of Montfort.

  • We have unfortunately given up visiting this castle because of the violent showers that fell on us on the way back from a hike... But we came out disappointed of a visit to this village which seems to have lost its soul: little respect of the heritage in the recent developments carried out by local residents as in the commune: cement veneer, openings (doorways and) Windows) degraded on the grounds of "renovation"... What we have seen has little resemblance with the photos on the site of the commune. A "treasure of yesteryear", Yes, but a little abused...

  • Ruined castle high up in the mountains with amazing views down onto the plain of Carcassonne. There are some restored inside rooms dedicated to finds and the history of the castle.
  • Hugely fascinating. Read some history before you go and stand and imagine......
  • This was a nice afternoon outing for us (family with two young teens). While the castle is partially ruined, there is enough there to see most of what it was like. There were plenty of areas to explore and lots of exhibits to go see. We were at the castle for about 1.5 hours which seemed enough for us. It seemed pretty difficult to find parking close to the castle so we parked up by the main road and walked in which worked well for us.
  • Lovely castle
  • Ruins of the castle of Saissac, if they are ruins, come to see the ruins. Don't expect the Cinderella Castle or Carcassonne, is a castle in ruins. Entrance 5 euros or 6 do not remember, the woman very nice entry. Any exhibition in the restored rooms, parts and books at the box office and good views from the top. The visit is carried out in twenty minutes.
