Saintes

Saintes, a small city on the banks of the Charente River in the Charente-Maritime department, is noteworthy for its Gallo-Roman, medieval, and renaissance heritage. It is a town of "Art and History." You can stay busy visiting several museums, watching a theater production, and attending one of their notable festivals. The historic Saint-Pierre neighborhood lies between the Capitole Hill and the Charente River with a significant number of historic monuments, which explains its integration as a 65 hectare (160 acre) conservation area. Built around the Saint-Pierre cathedral, the Place du Marché and the Place du Synode connect via many pedestrian streets where you can stroll past numerous medieval, renaissance, and limestone buildings. Be sure to visit the local museums that showcase interesting artifacts collected along the Roman road and visit the ruins of the Roman amphitheater on the left bank of the Charente, notable for its tiers built into the hill and embankment.
