Logis de la Chabotterie, Saint-Sulpice-le-Verdon

4.4
Logis de la Chabotterie, or Lodge of Chabotterie, was the last site of Vendee’s “great war.” General Charette was taken to the lodge after his capture, but it must have been a pleasant prison sentence and once you’ve see it’s enchanting environs you’ll understand why. Manicured 18th century gardens abut a house that is dedicated to Vendee’s war history and the stories of historical personages who’ve passed through the lodge. It is often the site of spectacles and concerts because of its import in the region’s history; but, spectacle or no, you’ll delight in the romantic heroism of this little maison tucked away in the French countryside. • Very nice House well furnished and well highlighted. Very complete tour with well thought out audio guides and in addition an interactive multimedia room. Enough to take care of a full day. Competent and available staff.

  • A beautiful place, we will regret the separate buildings and the night part dissociated from the historical part (that said with a modern layout loaded but tasteful) and the cult dedicated to the chef. We can also regret a decoration not highlighting the places and volumes in the dining room. On the other hand, what a culinary adventure! 4 hours at the table without seeing them pass, a service neither too little nor too much. It was just fantastic. A few details to review, as the agreements met & wines-good, but not always very relevant-, may be a lack of Audacity on the part of the chef and a little more humility would have allowed them to keep the 2 stars. That said, if you have never tasted this kitchen: go there with your eyes closed: it is a great moment.

  • There were actually 2 "Expos" at the Chabotterie when we went there: one on the wars of the Vendée, and a visit of the House itself, to see how it lived there during the time of the revolution. The exhibition on the Vendée wars is very complete (perhaps too much? what a mountain of information!), very interactive, which helps to keep the interest and well documented. The House is quickly visited. The whole thing is done with an audioguide, which shows up to some elements or which is triggered automatically when entering certain rooms. You can then walk through the Park, with even a small path to the Croix de Charrette, where the General was arrested. Anyway, counting a good afternoon. There is also an on-site restaurant that we have not tested.

  • If one needs to know a piece of French history of times gone by visiting La Charbotterie would give a good insight on the turmoil France was in circa 1790’s. The displays on offer are excellently portrayed and it is possible to take on board a translation device to help understand. The Vendee war as it was known involved initially a group of high born gentlemen trying to usurp Napoleon and unfortunately they failed and by failing an awful lot of people lost their lives. If interested it is a place to go to and is open all year except the usual Bank holidays Christmas and New Year days
  • Great historic house and museum catering well for the English visitor with comprehensive audio guides. Beautiful grounds and very interesting house and history relating to the revolution.
  • A magical, beautiful place An old Vendean logis / castle, full of history about General Charette' s capture by the Republicans during the Vendean civil war just after the French Revolution. Everything is well detailled with audioguides in different languages about the different rooms of the castles and period artifacts and of course the Vendean war heroes. They are live events organised throughout the year, classical concerts, theatrical reconstructions, painting competions, esp. in the summer. The prices are affordable and there are also reductions for students, the unemployed, etc. Car park is free and ok-ish. I always look forward to going there and when we have visitors, we take them to the Chabotterie (easy access from the express road La Roche Sur Yon Nantes, well sign-posted.
