The Musée gallo-romain de Fourvière or Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon is a museum on the Gallo-Roman civilisation in Lyon (Roman Lugdunum), previously located in the heart of the Roman city and now sited near the city's Roman theatre on the Fourvière hill, half-buried into the hillside on the edge of the archaeological site. The new building was designed by Bernard Zehrfuss and opened in 1975. Internally, it is formed of a concrete spiral ramp descending and branching out into the display rooms. It is managed and operated by the Rhone department jointly with the archaeological museum of Saint-Romain-en-Gal. As well as displaying its own permanent collections of Roman, Celtic and pre-Roman material (inscriptions, statues, jewellery, everyday objects), a plan-relief of the ancient town and scale models of its major monuments such as the theatre and the Odeon, it also regularly hosts temporary exhibitions.

  • Great museum to visit if you happens to be in Lyon! I was here and was lucky enough to be with a friend who passionate and studied Archaeology!
  • really nice place in an historic place of the former city of Lugdunum
  • Some people might think that there is too many ancient stones in the Museum but the movie and all the objects inside the Museum can help you understand Lyon's history. I guess this is a must-see if you stay two weeks and have time for it. And if you are of course interested in History. Visited September 2015
  • This museum is built into the hillside overlooking the roman theater ruins above old Lyon. The museum is fairly comprehensive, and attempts to put a story to the artifacts with an excellent audio guide. The museum is build to be a gently descending ramp, with some overlooks for mosaics on the floor below. The quality of the displays is excellent. You can also view the theater from 2 large windows. A must stop on the Roman tour of Lyon.
  • Huge & gloomy display of Roman works beside not one, but two, Roman auditoria! The museum is set cleverly into the side of the hill so its true size is artfully concealed to tempt you in for what you think will be a short visit - but it is HUGE INSIDE. Proof that you can have too many Roman friezes - after a while it's your brain that freezes. Personally I preferred the Auditoria outside in the sun which offer great views to the east over Lyon and on to Mont Blanc on a clear day. But it's all good, and a must for any Roman fans.
