  • Among the most remarkable ancient sites in the South of the France, Glanum is largely due his rank. Located south of the city of Saint-Remy de Provence, we already like Glanum for the framework it offers, at the heart of the Alpilles with their garrigues. The site was long occupied by the Celts then hellenized during the Greek period, before being converted into deep under the Roman occupation of Gaul. The remains that have come back to that distant time: everything has not yet been updated, and the excavations continue. However, site open to the public already akin to the ruins of a city. There are so monumental constructions dating from the time of Augustus, such as the temples dedicated to Hercules and Valetudo (Goddess of health), the forum, the Curia, but also a residential area that made up a few sumptuous Roman villas and baths. The tour freely while walking along the route that runs through all of the remains, aided by explanatory brochures.

  • This site was an amazingly pleasant surprise. The ruins were much larger and more intact than we'd expected and the overlook was stunning. The guides in english were a bonus and so insightful. A must ...  more »
  • We visited this because we saw it on the way to Les Beaux. Surprisingly nice excavations which looked at life in the community as opposed to the usual and around here common Colosseum and Amphitheater...  more »

  • A very pleasant way to spend a morning on a sunny day, and learn about the early inhabitants of Provence. Very well-preserved structures among the best in the region.
  • Interesting place to visit. Impressive to see the ruin was built BCE. I don't think it's a must to see though.
  • Site Archéologique de Glanum is a great place to visit if you love ancient history. Ruins from The Salluvian, Hellenistic and Roman inhabitants from 6th century B.C to 14 A.D. You can pick up a guided map and stroll through the centuries. Go early to avoid the inevitable coaches full of sightseers. Entry is €7.50.
  • A lot more than just old stones.
  • The upper level view offers a good insight towards the strategic reason for it's placement. Good educational value in a couple hours worth of time.
