(4.3/5 based on 130 reviews on the web)
Take time for quiet reflection at Musee de la Grande Chartreuse, 2 km (1.2 mi) from Grand Chartreuse monastery, where visitors and motor vehicles are not allowed access. Monks and nuns built the museum to inspire future generations and educate people about this isolated community. Exhibits and an audio guide (available in English) inform you about the monks' way of life. The monastery is supported by the sale of its Chartreuse liqueur, produced since the 18th century. • The drive from Grenoble to Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse was exciting. Parking lot of the musee did had a few cars but there was no sign of life anywhere near. Entire place looked empty and far from live...  more »
  • Plan a trip to the Museum of the Grand Chartreuse is a must. And be sure to do it very carefully, because the museum works not always. Also the problem of getting to the Museum by public transport. Bus No. 7000 to commune St Pierre de Chartreuse departs from Gare Routiere Grenoble just a few times a day. And back as well. So the museum itself remains not so much time. And given the fact that the Museum has a Russian-language audio guide with lots of information on visiting the Museum should be found near 3:00. If you have free time, it's best to stay in the village overnight. Then besides the Museum you can see and the monastery itself, and the village, and the Church of Saint-Hugues de Chartreuse.

  • It was very informative with the audioguide. Well known for producing green alcohol. Great gifts for people who love drinking.
  • Very interesting, informative Museum. The staff is welcoming and familiar history. The only downside I would have liked to visit the monastery have to walk 2 km not obvious when we're having problems.

  • The Museum is very interesting and very well done. Allow 2 hours of visit.

  • Large Museum and a small shop for the purchase of souvenirs and liqueur. The audio guide is available in German language.

  • It was a very explicit on what is a chartreuse, and Museum which are the carthusians. Videos presentations in support. The testimony of a brother "well told". The monastery itself is visible only if you take your walking shoes and a minimum of equipment for mountain comfort. Nice ride in perspective... (you're not even gone?) The monastic store offers traditional liqueurs of the carthusians, but also tasty cream Cassis... Otherwise books, DVDs, icons, cookies...
