Musee de la Grande Chartreuse, Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse

4.3
#1 of 6 in Things to do in Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse
Take time for quiet reflection at Musee de la Grande Chartreuse, 2 km (1.2 mi) from Grand Chartreuse monastery, where visitors and motor vehicles are not allowed access. Monks and nuns built the museum to inspire future generations and educate people about this isolated community. Exhibits and an audio guide (available in English) inform you about the monks' way of life. The monastery is supported by the sale of its Chartreuse liqueur, produced since the 18th century. • This museum shows both the creation of the order as well as the thinking and acting of the monks in an impressive manner up to the present day. An audio - system support is helpful

  • The Museum is located in a beautiful setting. Hospitality is proactive and pragmatic. The visit lasts an hour and can be done in a wheelchair. Beware, the monastery itself cannot be visited: the architecture of the Museum does not represent that of the monastery. We found the meaning of the visit a bit confusing (for example general and historical lighting doesn't happen at the end of visit) and some rooms redundant. The visit gives a good insight into the daily life of the monks of the order of the Carthusians.

  • We really are in the midst of the spectacle of nature. To be honest the main goal was a bottle of Chartreuse (the two home we finished), but then you couldn't miss a visit to the Museum. Interestingly enough, although not a must. Beautiful hotel in the middle of the Woods. Fortunately there is the shop where to buy liquor.

  • It was very informative with the audioguide. Well known for producing green alcohol. Great gifts for people who love drinking.
  • Is there open in April 2017? I'd love to visit there.
  • Very interesting place
  • Indicate the time when you are paying admission tickets. .. .because arrived around 5 pm no time to see everything... asked us to get this closed out at 6:30! Otherwise it's to see and it is very interesting

  • A visit very well accompanied by the audio guide, rich teaching and a better approach to the life of the monks.
