Chateau de Crussol, Saint-Peray

An explosion in a quarry below Chateau de Crussol severely damaged part of the structure, but what remains is a testament to 12th-century architecture and engineering. In the 11th century, the castle was important in controlling transport along the Rhone River. It was lit on fire dozens of times during France's religious wars in the 16th century. Today you can tour the mostly ruined complex yourself all year round, and guided tours are available in the summer months. Plan a Saint-Peray trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • There are also several ways to the Castle, we took one through the forest. He was sometimes somewhat steeper and requires effort, but it was worth it. Once at the top opens up a wonderful view into the distance. The castle itself is in ruins, but even large parts of the Court and of the adjacent houses. Here, it would be nice if some labels or texts could provide information. Definitely worth a detour.

  • It is magical! It dominates the Valley, the city and the river. Come to Saint Peray and to climb to the castle is a great experience and encounter with history. Footpaths invite us to walk and with effort to reach the top and have the most beautiful view of the region!

  • The Castle dominates the plain and Saint - Peray. It's a memory of the time past that deserves to be restored. The walk to get there is steep but very nice. The show waiting for us on arrival compensates the efforts of ascension.

  • Very nice. Great view. The walk up was rather tiresome
  • Great place to visit without paying fees or parking. No guide but also means no restriction letting you roam the entire ruins.
  • Nice visit if you stay a day near Valence, good diferent path and hikes for views and calm, maybe very windy
  • One of my favorite places in the Ardeche. You can easily walk around in the area. With some imagination you reconstruct the castle. A lot of elements are still existing (but remain a ruin :-). On top of the castle let you eyes wander around. On good days you can see the Rhone valley, the Vercors and even the Alpes. Simon Visit my website:
