Chateau de Crussol, Saint-Peray

4.6
An explosion in a quarry below Chateau de Crussol severely damaged part of the structure, but what remains is a testament to 12th-century architecture and engineering. In the 11th century, the castle was important in controlling transport along the Rhone River. It was lit on fire dozens of times during France's religious wars in the 16th century. Today you can tour the mostly ruined complex yourself all year round, and guided tours are available in the summer months. Plan a Saint-Peray trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • We had a very good time to discover the ruins and the exposure of this castle. Lucky in summer to enjoy the entertainment of the heritage days and under a bright sun.

  • This Château is not impressed with his condition - more than a few wall remnants are not obtained from the actual Château, there's much better - but by the size of the entire system. Not only the mansion, but also the many houses of the whole castle complex are impressive wall remnants preserved or reconstructed not only foundations, as usually, but walls up often on window height. Roads and paths to the houses convey a vivid impression of a 'Castle village' below the actual "Castle". The system more like a large ancient archaeological site - just that there generally only foundations or less are preserved – as a medieval fortress. Not many plants in France and Germany, but in terms of the Burgdorf Crussol is second to none. In addition the wonderful view, you can experience even better by a little signposted trail. Unfortunately, the industrial area in the foreground is not the most beautiful sight - but saw the ants - cars - in the roundabouts time uh, that looks like fun already.

  • Very nice. Great view. The walk up was rather tiresome
  • Great place to visit without paying fees or parking. No guide but also means no restriction letting you roam the entire ruins.
  • Nice visit if you stay a day near Valence, good diferent path and hikes for views and calm, maybe very windy
  • One of my favorite places in the Ardeche. You can easily walk around in the area. With some imagination you reconstruct the castle. A lot of elements are still existing (but remain a ruin :-). On top of the castle let you eyes wander around. On good days you can see the Rhone valley, the Vercors and even the Alpes. Simon Visit my website: www.noireblanc.de
