Mont Gerbier de Jonc, Saint-Martial

4.4
#9 of 11 in Nature in Ardeche
Mont Gerbier de Jonc is a mountain of volcanic origin located in the Massif Central in France. It is made of a type of rock called phonolite. It rises to an altitude of 1551m, and its base contains three springs that are the source of the Loire, France's longest river. It is the second most-visited site in the département of Ardèche, after the Ardèche Gorges.Mont Gerbier de Jonc was formed 8 million years ago when a volcano erupted molten phonolite lava. The lava was too viscous to flow far and it cooled to form a lava dome of phonolite rock in the crater of the volcano. The lava dome has columnar jointing, which formed during cooling of the lava. The volcanic cone containing the lava dome was later eroded away, exposing the lava dome.

Hello, the source of the largest river of France... see hatching a trickle of water and imagine that it becomes a long river... pass of Mont Gerbier to the castles of the Loire, as indicated by the Terminal is pass of 1551 meters above sea level to arrive at St Nazaire 1020 Km more far! Put good shoes, plan warm clothing (even in summer) watch out for unscrupulous tourists who ride at full speed!

We climbed to the top of this mountain with a wind strong enough but it was a real treat! I'm not very sporty (26) but it was doable. However I do not recommend to people who do not have the habit of climbing, sneaking, and who do not have a sense of balance. He must still climb and climb rocks. The descent is less fun than the climb, but really worth the detour!

A beautiful walk/climb of over half an hour to the top of this mountain which is also the source of the Loire River. From the top you have a great 360 degree view. Very worth it! Sturdy walking shoes are recommended.

What we have found here a hairpin bends! Very briefly, on each other, challenging and fun to do with the engine! The final piece to the top wasn't with the engine, but the view was really fantastic!
