Crisbecq Battery, Saint-Marcouf

4.2
#12 of 25 in Historic Sites in Manche
Explore Utah Beach's largest artillery site at Crisbecq Battery, one of Nazi Germany's key defenses against the Allied invasion. Check out the artillery site's sturdy concrete bunkers and gun emplacements that housed the Czech-made Skoda artillery pieces, which fired back at Allied ships approaching from the sea. Traverse the battery's extensive network of 21 blockhouses, its underground rooms, and pillboxes to get a feel for what life as a German gunner was like in the time leading up to the Allied invasion. Don't miss the several rooms outfitted with dioramas and original equipment presented in their wartime state. The battery of Crisbecq was one of the constructions of the Atlantic wall, still unfinished on 6 June 1944, which explains some weakness in its defenses. She was the first battery to open fire on the Allied landing with its 4 210 mm bearing guns more than 30 km, and put up a fierce resistance until June 12 before be evacuated without a fight. The impressive bunker collapsed, near the home of the Museum, was not destroyed during the fighting, but after its capture by American ingenuity. The entire site has been carefully rehabilitated and cleaned her brush, giving a bird's-eye view of the fortification he represented at the time. Essential, with close Azeville battery, as part of a visit to Utah Beach.

We came here ' accidentally ' when we were driving around a bit at the. Definitely worth a visit, like the Maisy Battery gives a good picture of the defense mechanism of the Germans and you also get a much better picture what was going on behind the dunes on D Day.

Great little place. Several different bunkers with a lot to see in them. Not a very long walk so it's easy for kids.

Worth a visit if you are interested in the history of Walter Ohmsen and want to see the original site. Also the view to the ocean is nice. Beside that the museum offers little to no information. The audioguide of Batterie d'Azeville, which is nearby, answered more questions about the Crisbeque Battery than their own museum! So if you just want to visit one i would recomend Batterie d'Azeville over this one!
