Batteries de Crisbecq, Saint-Marcouf

4.2
Explore Utah Beach's largest artillery site at Batteries de Crisbecq, one of Nazi Germany's key defenses against the Allied invasion. Check out the artillery site's sturdy concrete bunkers and gun emplacements that housed the Czech-made Skoda artillery pieces, which fired back at Allied ships approaching from the sea. Traverse the battery's extensive network of 21 blockhouses, its underground rooms, and pillboxes to get a feel for what life as a German gunner was like in the time leading up to the Allied invasion. Don't miss the several rooms outfitted with dioramas and original equipment presented in their wartime state. • When you arrive at this site you can't imagine its size or that 400 German soldiers lived there during the Second World War. It's amazing how good everything was there. A small recommendation... take the optional audio guide... that's a plus.

  • The Batteries de Crisbecq is a fortified military bunker system about 10 kilometres from Utah Beach in Normandy, France. In WW2 this hill top bunker system had several large guns overlooking one of th...  more »
  • A place steeped in history that we were able to visit with our dogs. All bunkers are open with reconstructed scenes that allow us to immerse ourselves in the lives of the fighters.

  • An extremely well preserved and curated WWII German coastal defense position, a piece of the Atlantic Wall. This gives great insight into the overall defensive strategy of the Germans during the D-Day invasion. This particular installation was firing on Utah Beach and was subsequently overrun about five days into the invasion push inland. Very nice staff and a great way to spend several hours at a battery location that is not typically overrun with bus loads of tourists!
  • Amazing place, highly recommended and the guide is so informative
  • It's so very easy to ignore the Germans when visiting the D-Day sites in Normandy. It's easy to forget that their young men were, essentially, the same as the Allies young men. Crisbecq is worth an hour or two of your time to see D-Day from the other side. A well put together tour of one of the key defence posts in The Atlantic Wall. It gives you a good feel for the task of the young German soldiers trying to defend against D-Day. You also get a superb view of the area from Point D'Hoc along the coast. Excellent
  • Fantastic interesting place to visit. Interested or not of D Day landings this is a must. This is well worth a visit. See how the Germans defended the invasion. As you walk through the trenches you find bunkers which are accessible.
  • Despite many bombings during the spring of 1944 and a large bombing the night before the Normandy landings, two of the guns stayed operational and opened fire on the Utah Beach area on D-Day, sinking the destroyer USS Corry, which ran onto a mine while trying to maneuvre, and damaging several other ships. The battleships USS Arkansas, USS Nevada and USS Texas were ranged and fired against the battery, knocking one gun out at approximately 08:00hrs and destroying the second one at around 09:00hrs. The first gun was repaired and fired again on 8 June. The battery was taken the 12th in the morning without a fight by the 39th Regiment after the 9th US Infantry Division landed at Utah Beach. The heaviest damage was caused by an ammunition explosion after the battle.
