Les Rochers Sculptes, Saint-Malo

3.2
#4 of 6 in Historic Sites in Saint-Malo
Over 300 figures of Les Rochers Sculptes were made by the late Abbot Fouré who was deaf and mute. Carved from marble with only a chisel and a hammer, his bas-relief faces feature legends from the sea, the pirates, and the current events of his time. Figures carved into seaside stone are considered art brut in the environmental visionary type of presentation. This is the story of the Abbot thicket... In 1894, he was forced to abandon his position as Rector at Laura despite a petition of his parishioners and to withdraw as used priest, in Rothéneuf, 5 km from Saint-Malo (Rothéneuf is today in the suburbs of this city) the clergyman began a monumental work directly carved on the rocks, mural carved in the open air, at the mercy of erosion marine. For 13 or 14 years, end 1894 to 1907, he sculpts more than 300 statues on this together remarkable of granitic rocks overlooking the sea and creates sculptures in wood in his house in the village called "High madness", 'Hermitage of Rothéneuf' or 'House of the hermit' and also later known as the "wood Museum. In 1907, struck by paralysis, and reached speech difficulty, he is forced to stop all its activities. (Thank you Wikipedia) Somewhere impressive even today because with sea erosion sculptures disappeared, but there is still a lot! Admission is charged, very cheap... I don't remember the fare, but whatever it is it's worth really look!

Tourist trap! It is true that it's nice to see, but that's all, and €2,5 entry it's abused. We told at the entrance 20 Minutes of visit, I would say rather 10. However the panorama is just beautiful, and you can enjoy all the time you want. However, by taking the footpath which starts before the entrance to the Museum, we have access to the same landscape and bypassing the cash box.

Its worth the look but nothing that isn't worth a long trip! If you are of Yes but in the opposite way. The positive: a piece of history to discover through rocks carved on the reefs. Two negatives: avoid especially go with small children, the place is very steep is very rocky attention! And then a guy at the entrance dares to charge admission 2.50... We must dare to frankly...

This place is a shame. Not the sculptures, mildly interesting, but the local family making money out of a part of the coast that is supposed to be accessible for all. No service is provided against the 2,5 euros required to access the site. Many sculptures are barely visible (erosion) and nothing seems to be done to preserve them. So it appears that we are only paying a private entity to access a public space. Outrageous.

This is incredible and astonishing. A blind man in the 19th century spent years chiselling all kinds of figures into the rock face on the coast. And many of them are still visible today.

Great place to visit, if you have some spare time on your way to Cancale.

€ 2,50 entrance and it's a wonderful show waiting for you. These sculpted rocks are beautiful, the site is steep and difficult with children at an early age but well worth the trip. The view is more magical, panoramic view of the sea. Walk not to be missed!

Visit quick but fun to do for the curiosity of these carved rocks and especially for the view. I do not recommend age with young children. Parcontre we would of wanted to eat at the restaurant 😋
