Paroisse de St Jean de Luz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz
(4.7/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
Though appearing simple from the outside, Paroisse de St Jean de Luz features a gilded wooden altarpiece that's so intricately carved, it's been declared a historic monument in its own right. King Louis XIV also married the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain here, making the church a national historic monument, too. Wander through the church, parts of which date back to the 15th century, to see the many carvings. The altarpiece alone includes statues of 18 saints and representations of the Holy Spirit and God. • Type bastide from the outside with its large straight stones and its octagonal tower, it does not offer the prospect, hemmed in neighbouring houses. Traces of a door walled up on the South façade remind of the marriage of Louis XIV with Marie Thérèse in 1660. Enter through the porch of the same façade. First look at the impressive altarpiece of the chancel barely illuminated by stained glass. Are moving us in the driveway on the right to find the coin that will light up the whole. Wooden Golden, the statues of the saints face you. Turn around and discover the nave with its galleries and the monumental organ in the background. In ex-voto, a model of the steam of the Empress Eugénie hangs from the ceiling. Also, note in the box reserved for the municipality, a former painting of the last supper with from balloons (BD bubbles). For other details, you can get based on your interests. On the other hand, no trace expressed the royal wedding which was held. So, no ghosts of the Court of Mazarin and of the Sun King. Not to be missed. Free tours at 5 pm in summer.

  • I attended a wonderful concert (young and talented Russian cellist, Requiem of Fauré, great Orchestra of Bayonne, beautiful choir...) in a beautiful church. Memorable evening.

  • This church from 17 century is absolutely unique, I've never visited one like this! By construction it resembles an overturned ship, wooden altar is decorated by 20 statues of saints, a choir walls are covered with ornament paintings, the main hall is lined with 3 rows of tribunes and the rear carries wonderful wooden organ.

  • Beautiful church which runs along the rue Gambetta with beautiful architecture. It is here that it occurred the marriage of Louis XIV and Maria Theresa in 1660. To visit without hesitation.
