Paroisse de St Jean de Luz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz
(4.7/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Though appearing simple from the outside, Paroisse de St Jean de Luz features a gilded wooden altarpiece that's so intricately carved, it's been declared a historic monument in its own right. King Louis XIV also married the Infanta Maria Theresa of Spain here, making the church a national historic monument, too. Wander through the church, parts of which date back to the 15th century, to see the many carvings. The altarpiece alone includes statues of 18 saints and representations of the Holy Spirit and God. • Must visit of St Jean de Luz. Decoration, height and typical basque architecture with its balconies in wood... make a place of relaxing and intimate worship. I loved

  • We made a brief stop at this French village, where we walk along the promenade and main street: Rue Leon Gambetta. In this, is this beautiful and unusual Church, which highlights its interior. From the outside it doesn't seem anything of this world, but inside it impresses with its decoration, stained glass windows and organ. Visit not to be missed!

  • A must see and listen to "religiously" the organ... Even if you don't know the history or architecture let yourself carried away by the beauty of all the elements of this building. A suspended moment!

  • This church from 17 century is absolutely unique, I've never visited one like this! By construction it resembles an overturned ship, wooden altar is decorated by 20 statues of saints, a choir walls are covered with ornament paintings, the main hall is lined with 3 rows of tribunes and the rear carries wonderful wooden organ.
  • Good
  • Beautiful church which runs along the rue Gambetta with beautiful architecture. It is here that it occurred the marriage of Louis XIV and Maria Theresa in 1660. To visit without hesitation.
