Abbaye Saint Guilhem Le Desert, Saint-Guilhem-le-Desert
(4.7/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web)
Abbaye Saint Guilhem Le Desert, a Benedictine Abbey founded in 804 CE, is an official historical monument with notable architecture. The porch of the church dates from the 12th century, and the bell tower was constructed in the 15th. The nave is taller than the average church nave, with four bays, double arches, and supporting pilasters. The nave and two aisles feature a semicircular, barrel vaulted design. Admire the relieving arches on the side walls. The well-preserved, ornate Altar Guilhem is in its original condition, with white marble and black limestone inlaid with multicolored glass paste. The lapidary features decorative columns and statues, as well as the marble tomb of the founder of the abbey and other sarcophagi. • On the road to St Jacques de Compostelle, this abbey was built in honor of Guilhem, grandson of Charles Martel. A haven of peace in the end bottom of the Valley of the Versus Creek which flows into the Hérault and its magnificent gorges nearby. Visit the splendid cloister, and especially the Museum and Bookstore surrounding him. Wonderful photos to do. And from time to time, the live music in the Abbey, fabulous! Make time to visit this village like no other, the architecture and very neat gardens.

  • the village won't be very badly, but the parking lot you cools and the man in blue is the, otherwise small streets very pretty square with its shops and its plane tree

  • Returning from an early morning hike, the village was almost deserted, so beautiful and relaxing! Essential in the region, avoid simply a middle of the day in midsummer, there are too many people...

  • A charming medieval abbey. Part of it is now in the Cloisters Museum in New York.
  • Beautiful abbey in a typical village. The hike around the village is a must!
