Chateau de St-Germain, Saint-Germain-en-Laye

#1 of 14 in Things to do in Saint-Germain-en-Laye
Chateau de St-Germain is a royal palace first built by Louis VI and currently houses the magnificent National Museum of Archaeology. You can view secrets of prehistory, the Iron Age, and Gaul within an old-fashioned château, a long-time grand residence of the Kings of France. As you continue outside, garden terraces offer an amazing view of greater Paris.

The museum exhibits around 30,000 archaeological objects, making it one of the most magnificent collections in Europe, and these objects are divided into seven collections. When you’re finished here, the Saint-Louis chapel, which adjoins the château, is not to be missed. It is a masterpiece of classic gothic architecture. A few days after admiring the wonderful park (the castle is closed on Tuesdays), visited the Castle, or rather, the Museum housed in the Castle because of the castle itself, in fact, do not see anything except a beautiful fireplace in a large room occupied by glass cabinets and miscellaneous items. There is only one piece of furniture (probably all moved to the Palace of Versailles): all spaces are occupied by visitable Museum (definitely nice but not as to enchant an Italian). Before you enter the Museum you can visit (without ticket) the Saint Chapelle. This completely bare: the content was moved, once, in the Saint Chapelle in Paris. Still has its charm. To see!

The site is unique! The grounds are beautiful and the terrace designed by Lenôtre is absolutely stunning with great views over the Valley! The Castle has been restored and it is even more gorgeous than before... sublissime! Take the time to visit the Museum which is rich in beautiful pieces for lovers of prehistory... And take the opportunity to visit the centre of Saint Germain en Laye... it's all the sweetness of the province...

Beautiful gardens in summer and winter. Views over Paris are especially lovely in the evening when the skyline is lit up. First Sunday of every month you can get into the chateau/museum for free (check at peak seasons). The forest walks in the park are beautiful with plenty of bars, restaurants and shops to grab a coffee, snack or meal

Beautiful chateau which houses an archaeology museum! Follow France's history through ancient times throughout the Roman era in a historical setting. They seem understaffed so be prepared to begin on whichever floor is open, the open floor will alternate every hour or so.
