St Michael's Abbey Church and its cloister, are the remains of the benedictine Abbey which was founded in Saint-Genis-des-fountains surrounding 778-780. As often, after the Foundation and an era of great prosperity, came the decline and the final fall at the time of the Revolution. "Outside: notice on the right of the entrance, the old Portal surmounted by a lintel in marble from Céret, first Romanesque sculpture dated in stone (1019-1020) between two Latin inscriptions whose translation gives this:"the twenty-fourth year of the reign of King Robert, Guillaume, Abbot by the Grace of God, commanded to do this work in honor of Saint-Genis to the monastery called fountains." Inside: Carolingian altar table; many altarpieces; beautiful statuary; tables; murals; processional banner; stained glass; lectern; monolith font; stoup. The cloister: 1850, the church became the parish of the village, then, between 1922 and 1924, until it is dismantled, much of the columns of the cloister of the 13th century is sold to a Parisian antiques dealer. Time, in 1924, the Southeast remained on-site is classified in Historical Monuments. After restoration, the upper ambulatory was converted into Gallery for exhibitions of greater or lesser known artists. With the cloister and its polychrome Marbles that make its specificity (white marble from Céret, pink Villefranche-de-conflent marble and black marble of the Corbières Roussillonnaises), with the beautiful sculptures of the marquee of its columns decorated with local flora and fauna motifs, allegorical subjects and biblical scenes.

The Abbey was founded in the 8th century and among the most important parts is the beautiful Romanesque header of white marble of the year 1020 which is the oldest Romanesque sculpture in stone. We could not access the Church it is time of communions and they were on it. The cluastro was closed, but see this door lintel and other ornaments was worth the trip.
