Clocher de l'eglise Monolithe, Saint-Emilion

(4.4/5 based on 900+ reviews on the web)
One of the largest European churches built underground, Clocher de l'eglise Monolithe was hewn, starting in the ninth century, from a single rock. This UNESCO World Heritage site was named for the Benedictine monk Emilion, who lived there as a hermit and performed miracles. The church was built by his followers over three centuries. While Emilion was never formally made a saint by the Catholic church, locals included "saint" in the name out of respect for the monk. You can tour the church, including its caves and bell tower, which offers views of the city and gorgeous vineyards. • The visit of the monolithic Church is an absolute must if you are travelling to Saint-Emilion. Entering the Cathedral entirely carved out of the rock leaves literally speechless.

  • A very friendly hostess. Another look at the history of Saint Emilion: the life of Saint Emilion, the history of the village... visit the catacombs and the very impressive monolithic Church. You can end your visit the 196 stairs of the Bell Tower for only 2 euros per people

  • Beautiful and surprising place than the Church dug into the ground of the city. Booking is mandatory to visit but really worth the detour. It has been closed for many years and must visit it as long as this is still possible. A not to be missed while visiting Saint Emilion.

  • Here is the place of red wine. Beautiful view from here.
  • Flott og majestetisk midt i byen!!!
  • The best of a town or city, is to view it from the top to get the best view possible. To do in Saint Emilion should go up to the Bell Tower. The keys are ordered in the fair tourism office opposite and costs €1.5 per person.
