Clocher de l'eglise Monolithe, Saint-Emilion

Categories: Churches, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.5/5 based on 800+ reviews on the web
One of the largest European churches built underground, Clocher de l'eglise Monolithe was hewn, starting in the ninth century, from a single rock. This UNESCO World Heritage site was named for the Benedictine monk Emilion, who lived there as a hermit and performed miracles. The church was built by his followers over three centuries. While Emilion was never formally made a saint by the Catholic church, locals included "saint" in the name out of respect for the monk. You can tour the church, including its caves and bell tower, which offers views of the city and gorgeous vineyards. • Located in the Centre of the beautiful medieval town of Saint Emillion, this underground Church is unique not only for being carved in rock, but its size qualified it as the largest in Europe. It was built between the XI and XII centuries and is very close to the collegiate church. On the surface there is a tower for the Bell that indicates its location. Unfortunately it is not allowed to take pictures inside. The visit is worth with guide in Spanish. 100% recommended.

  • Carved out of solid limestone, this is a magnificent structure once used as a church. The tour included the hermitage of St. Emilion and catacombs sans remains.
  • The best of a town or city, is to view it from the top to get the best view possible. To do in Saint Emilion should go up to the Bell Tower. The keys are ordered in the fair tourism office opposite and costs €1.5 per person.
