Clocher de l'eglise Monolithe, Saint-Emilion

(1,000+ reviews on the web)
Church Landmark
One of the largest European churches built underground, Clocher de l'eglise Monolithe was hewn, starting in the ninth century, from a single rock. This UNESCO World Heritage site was named for the Benedictine monk Emilion, who lived there as a hermit and performed miracles. The church was built by his followers over three centuries. While Emilion was never formally made a saint by the Catholic church, locals included "saint" in the name out of respect for the monk. You can tour the church, including its caves and bell tower, which offers views of the city and gorgeous vineyards. • The best of a town or city, is to view it from the top to get the best view possible. To do in Saint Emilion should go up to the Bell Tower. The keys are ordered in the fair tourism office opposite and costs €1.5 per person.
