Chateau Soutard, Saint-Emilion
(4.3/5 based on 85+ reviews on the web)
Witness the site of an important innovation in winemaking (and taste the fruits of their labor) at Chateau Soutard. The chateau got into the winemaking business in the middle of the 18th century. It was during those early days that Soutard first began implementing the method of planting vineyards in rows. While it's natural today, 300 years ago it was less common. Visitors can tour the vineyard and castle, and taste some of its more popular wines. There's also an opportunity to learn about cooking with wine. Be sure to call ahead for this opportunity--it's available on a limited basis. Make Chateau Soutard part of your personalized Saint-Emilion itinerary using our Saint-Emilion vacation planner.

  • We went to Chateau Soutard as part of our Bordovino Tour, and it was a wonderful winery to visit. We had an excellent explanation of the winery and it's practices by one of the staff people, and she w...  more »
  • Of the Chateau that I've seen in Saint-Emilion have to say that this visit was not what I expected. The visit as they have done all that has been in English but had a little involved Guide for my taste. We were three French and two Spanish couples. The guide spoke very fast in English which was not a problem but in other visits e.g. in ferrand's guide told us that he would speak more slowly than he normally did without him saying anything because there was a couple not controlling much. I understand that this English one not to complain if you'll do a tour in that language, but for my negative note is twice during the visit one of the French couples asked to guide in English some doubts and guide instead of reply in English was the language that was being used in the tour he replied in French. Moreover, say that curiously the tasting room is fine because it is underground and the room where are the barrels is lined with beautiful panels that make mention of paradise and are adorned with floral motifs and birds.

  • Very nice place, staff welcoming in the image of our passage to the Castle guide. Small flat, too many people for the same visit!

  • The Chateau is beautifully appointed and quite impressive. I visited with a large group and our guide gave a lovely tour and handled the tasting very well. I thought it was worth the visit.
  • Mediocre. Having never been to a château, we expected to see vines and grapes. Instead, we saw tanks, barrels and more barrels. The guide was nice, but spoke fast, as if rushing through the process. The wine tasting was decent.
