St. Maclou's Church, Rouen

4.4
#5 of 14 in Historic Sites in Rouen
Considered one of the best examples of the flamboyant style of Gothic architecture in France, St. Maclou's Church was built during the transition from the Romanesque period to the Gothic. Construction began sometime after 1432; this Roman Catholic church was to replace an existing parish church that had suffered from several years of neglect. Master mason Pierre Robin created a basilica-style church with four radiating chapels around an octagonal choir. The decoration is macabre, harkening to the church's grim roots in the black death pandemic. Flying buttresses above the aisles are attached to the western wall, which features a rose window. • an architectural treasure I am deeply atheistic but force is to admire this wonderful achievement of middle age: everything is a feast for the eyes... Saint-Maclou is not the only wonder of Rouen, but she is worth a visit... Please park your car in the parking lot of the old Tower (barely 200/300 metres away).

  • Characteristic example of the "flamboyant Gothic" style this pretty church reminds of a cathedral in miniature by the modesty of its dimensions, but especially by the beauty of its remarkably carved façade, the Interior is homogeneous and a great aesthetic balance; beautiful indoor chapels and a remarkable carved staircase leading to the organ. In addition the Church is located near the Notre Dame Cathedral, but on a charming square in a particularly quiet area with lovely shops.

  • A fine gothic gem, must see.
  • Beautiful Church in the old town of Rouen. The church was partially destroyed during WW2 but rebuilt the same way.
  • Nice from the outside, but only open on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, so I didn't see inside.
  • Nice from outside unfortunately it's closed now
  • Beautiful church! Very impressive.

Where to stay in Rouen

If your main reason for visiting Rouen is its famous cathedral, which inspired Monet to paint dozens of canvasses, consider booking your room at a hotel in or around the city center. Despite being within walking distance of the cathedral and the river, hotels in this area provide comfort and privacy at modest prices. If you're looking to splurge and location isn't your priority, think about staying at a luxurious hotel-spa situated farther outside the city, where you can have access to heated outdoor pools.
