Pont Gustave Flaubert, Rouen

2.4
#34 of 57 in Things to do in Rouen
Pont Gustave Flaubert is a vertical-lift bridge over the River Seine that officially opened in September of 2008 after four years of work. The bridge location chosen ensures that it is the last crossing before the river flows to the open sea. The bridge serves a similar purpose to that of the venerable Tower Bridge in London--providing a visit break between port and city. I'm not especially beautiful, it cuts the landscape. In addition it never rises. I think he's ruining the landscape of the city. Too bad...

This bridge is a highway crossing the city to the East, right bank to Rouen exit is ridiculous, the direction of Barentin in a turn is not better. The book concrete is ugly and cold, looks like two factory chimneys. From the Sainte Catherine Hill it destroys the landscape, but it's still better than the view on the left bank and the dormitory of the oldest industries in the Valley. I don't understand why we do pass highways in cities. And I've never seen this bridge to get up! Since its construction there another identical on Bordeaux. Completely useless and ugly, like the other bridges in Rouen, there is a panorama not too bad on the city from this bridge, that's all!

Beyond its peculiar architecture to horizontally lift her central apron to get boats to fort draught or towering masts, this bridge allows pedestrians via its bridges joining the two banks arranged for the walk and today meccas of ballads of the Rouen weekend and the joggers. Chairs wooden on the peninsula can lie down the River in a park and landscape away from the bustle of the city.

Where to stay in Rouen

If your main reason for visiting Rouen is its famous cathedral, which inspired Monet to paint dozens of canvasses, consider booking your room at a hotel in or around the city center. Despite being within walking distance of the cathedral and the river, hotels in this area provide comfort and privacy at modest prices. If you're looking to splurge and location isn't your priority, think about staying at a luxurious hotel-spa situated farther outside the city, where you can have access to heated outdoor pools.
