#31 of 70 in Things to do in Rouen
Pont Gustave Flaubert is a vertical-lift bridge over the River Seine that officially opened in September of 2008 after four years of work. The bridge location chosen ensures that it is the last crossing before the river flows to the open sea. The bridge serves a similar purpose to that of the venerable Tower Bridge in London--providing a visit break between port and city. Plan a Rouen trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • in the context of the landscaped around docks, this bridge is a monument in itself - very nice view on the docks

  • In addition to prominent cathedrals I still collect and notable bridges. During the last trip was able to drive (and even make photo) on the impressive bridge "Normandy" and here is another, and this unique bridge in Rouen. Why unique? Gustave Flaubert bridge is sliding, rather it is a bridge-elevator where rises vertically up one of its parts (Central) length of 116 m. This allows you to pass under the bridge on the river Seine vessels even of big size. Don't think this happens continuously, year is you can see a couple of dozen times and always with a large gathering of people. The span of the bridge can be raised to a height of as much as 55 m for about 15 minutes, and then the River would pass even sailboat, heading for the famous regatta "Ruanskaja Armada". This bridge, recommend drove on it, in the ordinary form, of course, nothing special, and its length is not great-a total of 670 m.

  • Brilliant piece of engineering
  • Beautiful view
  • Amazing
  • A particularly beautiful art book. A lift and stairs are made available to cross the Seine on foot or by bike. Once at the top, the view of the docks is beautiful despite the traffic noise. This bridge allows to reach the almost island very easily.

Where to stay in Rouen

If your main reason for visiting Rouen is its famous cathedral, which inspired Monet to paint dozens of canvasses, consider booking your room at a hotel in or around the city center. Despite being within walking distance of the cathedral and the river, hotels in this area provide comfort and privacy at modest prices. If you're looking to splurge and location isn't your priority, think about staying at a luxurious hotel-spa situated farther outside the city, where you can have access to heated outdoor pools.
