#6 of 13 in Museums in Rouen
Delve into the development of medical technology and practices at Musee Flaubert et d'Histoire de la Medecine, which was also the birthplace of famed French writer Gustave Flaubert. Explore the museum, including recreated living quarters from the 18th century, medical oddities, and Flaubert's birth room. Despite the museum's name, the focus lies on medical technology from the 18th and 19th centuries rather than the author's life. You'll have the chance to see unorthodox medical instruments, stuffed mannequins, and even the mummified heads of several people executed by hanging. Don't miss the full-sized and restored apothecary, which gives you a glimpse into the medical industry's past. • This Museum of the history of medicine might seem daunting, although on the contrary! Objects of a distant past we have fun, see surprised. It's a curiosity not to be missed.

  • collected, organized, inquisitive. The Flaubert's home more than the Temple of culture in the literal sense and a medical lab. interesting medical instruments and the exchanges of letters of the writer. Worth visiting. Few tourists, zero line at the entrance. an hour or so enjoyable.

  • It's weird Museum. It's a little marriage of the carp and the rabbit: we discover treasures of (sometimes barbaric in our eyes) inventions of Medicine of not so long ago and a few treasures of a child who lived there in his early years: Gustave Flaubert. Sometimes, medicine of that time have frankly disturbing (toddlers beware!). But it is always moving. The current exhibition on abandoned children will stay with you. As Flaubert, he walks his mind throughout the House by a few quotes that will invite you to read or re-read at least his dictionary of received ideas. For us, this has been a visit unexpectedly, surprising, sometimes disturbing but funny and nice as a whole.

  • A museum that does not mine yet, one has the impression of entering a cabinet of curiosity. He harmony history of medicine in the history of its occupants, including Gustave Flaubert. The room on phrenology is amazing! It is a place that deserves more visibility because soucent obscured by visitors in Rouen.

  • Nice Museum. Small, but I find the comments a bit too virulent. You will not spend an afternoon but easily 1.5 h to see the House in which Flaubert grew. There are not a lot of info and former medical equipment. Very friendly unlike what is mentioned

  • Small museum quite unknown although very interesting, with beautiful sights like the mummies or instruments of medicine in the past.

  • There are also interesting things, but all put in bulk with cartouches in French only (at least there were in English ...). Cashier unkind that doesn't try to meet or make themselves understood somehow, despite our explicit admission of not understanding French.

  • Interestingly enough, a little rough but mostly too bad "gatekeeper" to the entrance if little happy to be there and so very discourteous...
