Ecole Supérieure d'Art et Design Le Havre-Rouen, Rouen

4.2
#3 of 14 in Museums in Rouen
The former ossuary (a cemetery for plague victims' bodies) at Ecole Supérieure d'Art et Design Le Havre-Rouen is an eerie reminder of the plague's devastation during the Middle Ages. Take a stroll in the 16th-century, half-timber courtyard, which has four galleries with carved designs. Large beams in the fourth gallery feature haunting carvings of bones and skulls, as well as coffins and gravediggers' tools. Finding the entrance can be tricky. Keep an eye out overhead for a sign with the name of the atrium, which you access through a passage between two buildings,. As you enter the grounds, look to your right to see a mummified cat preserved in the wall. • from latin "atrium" (central courtyard of a house) the stone referred to a cemetery in the middle ages, it is one of the rare European cemeteries in the city center and its origin goes back to the great black plague of 1348 that decimated the 3/4 of the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. The current buildings were built in the 16th century since originally there was no floor. Badly indicated access is through a porch to the 186 of the Boston Street just behind the Church of Saint-Maclou, (quite logical since it was a cemetery) a little sad but relaxing atmosphere in this square courtyard surrounded by galleries in glass and black wood (free access from 8: 00 to 18: 00). Part of the galleries is occupied by the regional fine arts school or temporary exhibitions but there is a form of abandonment rather unfortunate whereas it would be certainly possible to animate it no stores of art and antiques. possibly a coffee/Bookstore, to make it one of the major "spots" in the city.

Where to stay in Rouen

If your main reason for visiting Rouen is its famous cathedral, which inspired Monet to paint dozens of canvasses, consider booking your room at a hotel in or around the city center. Despite being within walking distance of the cathedral and the river, hotels in this area provide comfort and privacy at modest prices. If you're looking to splurge and location isn't your priority, think about staying at a luxurious hotel-spa situated farther outside the city, where you can have access to heated outdoor pools.
