Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, Rouen

(4.7/5 based on 2,600+ reviews on the web)
Experience the gothic inspiration that Impressionist painter Claude Monet felt at Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, where he filled 28 canvasses with the image of this cathedral. Gargoyles that dominate the rooftop stare down as you approach the façade, but even higher up is the soaring 151-m (495-ft) lantern tower atop the transept. Prepare for sweeping panoramic views of the Norman old town and Seine Valley from the lookouts.

The abbey also has several burials, including the tomb that contained Richard the Lionheart's heart. The cathedral's strong musical tradition means you may hear a talented organist playing the massive Jacquot-Lavergne organ. The preserved archiepiscopal palace and its conserved auxiliary buildings dating to the 12th century are rare gems in France. • Rouen is a beautiful city, which is required to visit the Cathedral, Gothic masterpiece beloved by Monet, and the Center is impressive with all those timbered houses (too bad the periphery is poorly maintained). Don't miss the night show with video projected on the front!

  • This is a great site with plenty of history, so essential. With the mist for our visit, we could imagine why Monet wanted to paint it under different climates and lights. I wonder how this Cathedral was before losing a lot of windows during the centuries.

  • If you're looking for the glitz of other Gothic churches this is not for you inside, thought he exterior rivals Notre Damn in Paris! I loved the simplicity and gothic splendour of this place! It soars...  more »
  • The best cathedral i have ever seen. In a blue morning sky background the towers and spires are majestic. Inspiring and impressing at the same time. Wished we had time to see at night with the lighting on
  • Awesome gothic architecture, the cathedral is beautiful on the outside and inside. Has a lot of history. The music sounds wonderful during Sunday mass service.
  • An ancient cathedral in a quaint old town in Normandy which is called Rouen. It's a town that existed in the medieval era and this cathedrale of gothic architecture is really such a beauty. It's huge and there's a lot of history to it.
  • Beautiful even in the fog. A bit austere inside though
  • Magnificent. Amazing how it was built all those years ago without the equipment used today. We'll done to those who rebuilt it after the war. Money well spent for us to see in its true splendor.
