Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, Rouen

Experience the gothic inspiration that Impressionist painter Claude Monet felt at Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, where he filled 28 canvasses with the image of this cathedral. Gargoyles that dominate the rooftop stare down as you approach the façade, but even higher up is the soaring 151-m (495-ft) lantern tower atop the transept. Prepare for sweeping panoramic views of the Norman old town and Seine Valley from the lookouts.

The abbey also has several burials, including the tomb that contained Richard the Lionheart's heart. The cathedral's strong musical tradition means you may hear a talented organist playing the massive Jacquot-Lavergne organ. The preserved archiepiscopal palace and its conserved auxiliary buildings dating to the 12th century are rare gems in France. • This Cathedral is the icing on the cake after having surveyed the famous street of the big clock and its beautiful half-timbered houses. The façade carved Cathedral is probably the most beautiful of France with that of Strasbourg, a real lace and a real miracle when we know the violence of the Allied bombing of June 44 (were they close enough triage station which was occupied by the Germans? An exhibition of photos inside show how the building has suffered, as all the city Moreover and considerable restoration work. The Interior of the Cathedral isn't as impressive as outside, important series of statues worn by time and who were on the front before repairs.

  • A visit to this Cathedral is one of the "must-do" things. A beautiful church, rich in beautiful glass and Windows and art. Also the outside is overwhelming.

  • Magnificent! We were fortunate enough to hear the organ playing while we visited and it was brilliant. I was really surprised to find out that it was free to look around inside. A beautiful Cathedral well worth the visit.
  • In the daytime I could stare for hours at the intricate stonework. At night in the summer it becomes an amazing light show.
  • The light show is brilliant ! Don't miss it in the summer evenings! It's free and the beginning is at 22:30.
  • Famous viking Rollo, king of Normandie and brather of Ragnar Lothbrok, was burred there.
  • Great church. The façade is a can’t miss but must see. The inside is beautiful as well. We attended a Sunday morning mass and as visitors felt very welcome. Thank you for the hospitality.

Where to stay in Rouen

If your main reason for visiting Rouen is its famous cathedral, which inspired Monet to paint dozens of canvasses, consider booking your room at a hotel in or around the city center. Despite being within walking distance of the cathedral and the river, hotels in this area provide comfort and privacy at modest prices. If you're looking to splurge and location isn't your priority, think about staying at a luxurious hotel-spa situated farther outside the city, where you can have access to heated outdoor pools.
