Cite Religieuse, Rocamadour

4.5
#1 of 18 in Historic Sites in Lot
Historic Site Tourist Spot
Set halfway up a cliff in the Alzou canyon, Cite Religieuse can be reached by walking up Grand Escalier stairway or by paying a nominal fee to take an elevator down. Visitors who take the elevator miss the landing 140 steps up, which has a fine view of this fort. At the top, see the 11th-century Place St. Amadour, paved with white stone and surrounded by 7 chapels set inside 12th-century buildings, including St. Sauveur Basilica, St. Amadour crypt, and the chapel of Notre-Dame, with its famous statue of the Black Madonna. Don’t miss the superbly intact frescoes from the 12th century in the Romanesque St. Michel chapel, which is built into the cliff face. • Rocamadour is a site of exceptional, essential beauty if you are passing in the batch. Beyond the side related to the pilgrimage, religious city offers architecture and stunning panoramas. I recommend arrival by the bottom of the village to enjoy the most beautiful views. Shops in the village up to the castle through the sanctuary and the way of the cross, there will be efforts to provide to achieve this nice flan of cliff. A train and a lift are nevertheless provided for people with mobility problems. A guided tour is interesting in order not to miss the rich history of the place.

  • Just see! Site wonderful, magical, a moment of rest, of empty, prayers (for believers), and the tour continues by the castle in height, dizzying and amazing views...

  • Beautiful location in the middle of nowhere, worth a visit, the only setback the shops with absurd products.

  • Clinging on to the quay and several churches, very beautiful. Even in the winter some people and open restaurants, hotels.
