Cite Religieuse, Rocamadour
(4.3/5 based on 1,200+ reviews on the web)
Set halfway up a cliff in the Alzou canyon, Cite Religieuse can be reached by walking up Grand Escalier stairway or by paying a nominal fee to take an elevator down. Visitors who take the elevator miss the landing 140 steps up, which has a fine view of this fort. At the top, see the 11th-century Place St. Amadour, paved with white stone and surrounded by 7 chapels set inside 12th-century buildings, including St. Sauveur Basilica, St. Amadour crypt, and the chapel of Notre-Dame, with its famous statue of the Black Madonna. Don’t miss the superbly intact frescoes from the 12th century in the Romanesque St. Michel chapel, which is built into the cliff face. • Rocamadour is an exceptional site. It's beautiful and beautiful energy emerges from this place. In summer, the "religious" force feels, even if we're not "that type" here. Now, the winter, the site is empty, everything is closed, even the elevator that requires climbing (or not to visit the site if you have mobility problems). Cons, can cross the small town by car crossing the various doors, which is quite exceptional. Small flat, while one finds free public toilets in the last small village lost in the countryside, here, to pay, and have parts of 50 cents on itself (as in winter, no one can change money), which is not won. Strange to don't find this practice as the only religious city in the corner?

  • We were staying at the Hotel at the top so all of these places were within easy walking distance and well worth the visit.
  • We made a detour to go in one of the most visited sites in france, and well we should abstain... We are used to the most beautiful villages of france or site such the mont st michel, but here, everything is done to make spend... toilets, walls, the Basilica, the elevators, the crypt, the note goes up very quickly if you're not careful, and the street downstairs, that businesses "m..." selling trinkets without interest... I do not understand why this site is so highly rated, everything is done to make spend... Too bad because I think it was an interesting site to highlight... here it is the opposite
