Cite Religieuse, Rocamadour

(4.3/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
Set halfway up a cliff in the Alzou canyon, Cite Religieuse can be reached by walking up Grand Escalier stairway or by paying a nominal fee to take an elevator down. Visitors who take the elevator miss the landing 140 steps up, which has a fine view of this fort. At the top, see the 11th-century Place St. Amadour, paved with white stone and surrounded by 7 chapels set inside 12th-century buildings, including St. Sauveur Basilica, St. Amadour crypt, and the chapel of Notre-Dame, with its famous statue of the Black Madonna. Don’t miss the superbly intact frescoes from the 12th century in the Romanesque St. Michel chapel, which is built into the cliff face. • A very very nice place! We were delighted by these places where the walls seem to be able to tell stories! We regret not being able to spend more time and hope to come back to spend more time in contemplation at the top of the cross a place where time does not seem to have the same value, suspended between Earth and sky probably very busy in the summer, we were there in April under a beautiful Sun , with the colors of spring a beautiful moment!

  • When you have arrived by car, you can park in the large parking area at the bottom of Rocamadour. Either you take the little train which will take you directly to the doors of the village, you climb on foot (a quarter of an hour). Then you will be able to admire the bow doors, visit the Basilica of the Holy Savior, take the cross road which will lead you up to the Castle (attention that goes up...). You will also have the opportunity to take a lift that takes you to the level of the Basilica. Otherwise, in the heart of the village, you will see many shops of souvenirs or local specialties, direct sales from producers, restaurants, hotels, Café theater "Side Rock", the Gallery of painting "The old press", the office of tourism, the Town Hall... A nice ride
