One of the most splendid displays of Gothic architecture, Cathedrale Notre-Dame de Reims is where 34 kings of France were once crowned. Joan of Arc led the Dauphin to this cathedral to be crowned King Charles VII, and the last King Charles X was also crowned here in 1825.
The crowning jewel of this cathedral, the façade was completed in the 14th century following 13th century designs. Marc Chagall designed the stained glass at the east end in 1974, and above the door to the north is the "Laughing Angel" statue with a famous enigmatic smile.
You can climb the steps to the top of the towers to look at the concrete and timber roofline built in the 15th century. The towers are 81 m (267 ft) tall, and the south tower holds two great bells. The bell that weighs more than 10,000 kg (11 tons) was named "Charlotte" in 1570 by a Cardinal of Lorraine. Zelfs als atheïst kom ik telkens graag de kathedraal van Reims bezoeken. Dan wel niet wegens religieuze overtuiging, maar de immense omvang en geschiedenis van het gebouw, samen met de schoonheid binn... more »
Even as an atheist, I always like to visit the Cathedral of Reims. It may not be because of religious beliefs, but the immense size and history of the building, together with the beauty inside, make a deep impression.View original -
MAGNIFIQUE! Il y règne une atmosphère particulière à l'intérieur et que dire des détails des nombreuses statues extérieures! Un chef d'oeuvre de l'architecture gothique! A voir les vitraux de Chagall ... more »
magnificent! There is a special atmosphere inside and what about the details of the many outdoor statues! A masterpiece of Gothic architecture! To see the stained glass windows of Chagall but with outdoor clarity. In addition to the Tau Museum and the nearby art deco library.View original -
A very moving Cathedral, where French kings were crowned. Not surprised they chose Reims, with the most incredible stained glass - interesting to learn of the local family of glass makers. Also more r... more »

Absolutely splendid! Its architecture is the most astonishing I have ever seen! After all the events that degraded it since 1211, it has continuously been under renovation and now it is almost finished. It is a symbol of the French history that should definitely be visited.

A magnificent cathedral that challenges even the Notre Dame in Paris. Inside it has 3 beautiful rose windows that are breath taking. This spot is is made better by being in a town filled with a rich champagne culture and small crowds, not being nearly as crowded or dirty as Paris can be. A strong recommendation for anyone seeking architectural beauty in a less traveled place.

Knowing the destruction that this historic building suffered during WW1, the quality of the ongoing restoration work is extremely impressive. Unfortunately it may take another hundred years or more to complete the work, and some of the Cathedral's treasures can never be replaced. Whether you are of a Christian faith or not, these magnificent buildings stand as testimonials to the values and skills of those who built them. Just one of the must visit places within the city of Reims, for all those interested in French history. Visitors should also take the time to view another local world heritage site: the Basilica and Museum at St Remi. Again important and impressive restorations of locations with serious history. You will not be disappointed.

Beautiful historic cathedral. More impressive than Notre Dame in Paris and just as historically interesting. An interesting mix of old and new as much of it has been restored after WW1 bombings.
-
Truly beautiful gothic cathedral, with a beautiful history behind it! Definitely worth visiting, as it's completely free and you can buy souvenirs from inside and even the original Champagne from the shops around the cathedral.
