Chateau of Rambouillet, Rambouillet

3.3
#2 of 8 in Things to do in Rambouillet
A modified 14th-century stronghold at the heart of the Rambouillet forest, Chateau of Rambouillet is a royal residence with beautiful interiors and exteriors. François I, the Count of Toulouse, the Duke of Penthièvre, Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette, Napoleon I, and many others have visited. In 1883, the site then became the official residence of the presidents of the French Republic. Stop at the Queen's Dairy, a small sandstone building in the form of a Neoclassical temple. Look for the artificial cave with outer foliage, a marble sculpture of Julien, a nymph, and the goat Amalthée. In the English garden, visit the cottage built by the Duke of Penthièvre for the Princess de Lamballe. Its unusual decoration is made from shells, chips of marble, and mother of pearl. A small toilet cubicle with painted wooden paneling is adjacent to the great hall. • Visit of the Castle extremely disappointing, without real interest: 3.4 pieces open with a temporary exhibition at all to our liking! Gastropub and stylized animals: a real lion with feathers, birds stuck on... poor animals... Positive point: the guided tour of the Dairy Queen and the cottage to the shells must see! a very good guide! Very beautiful. We'll also come back to the Park.

  • Take advantage of the Park of the castle for a nice walk. Nice went well kept, beautiful sheltered spaces of the wind (significant one winter day). Courtesy is still in use here, it's quite rare to be stressed. Only damage: the shops are closed. .. .we would be well tempted by some shopping because the shop windows are full of promises and as it's a bit far, we're not sure to come back soon!

  • We visited the castle on March 1, so suffice to say there was no crowd in the aisles and so much the better! Very warm Laccueil of staff is a plus. Despite a few coins to which we have access, we were very disappointed to not see more inside the Castle. Fortunately, we were warned on arrival that a tour of the Dairy Queen and the cottage to shells was planned if we wanted. And fortunately we went because it was alright. We were alone with our guide, passionate about his craft that made us part of ŕecits all more interesting with each others punctuated by spikes of humor. So a big thank you. And notice the population: Please, no rrachez not shells in the cottage, preserve our magnificent heritage!

  • Lovely place, totally recommend to visit the castle and then wander around the lovely parc which is open most of the time. Gotta say the grass is just great and there's many lakes and fountains... Recommend it for a sunny day tho.
  • Lovely small chateau. Beautiful grounds and garden. Inside tour isn't large, but nice to see.
  • After more than 14 month of work, we can enjoy the castle.
  • Very picturesque, the grounds are beautiful with long or short walks. The Chateau itself is currently closed for renovation until summer 2018.
  • There's nothing to see inside. For the fees paid, it's just a rip off
