National Parks are the pride of France, amongst other destinations. One among these parks is Mercantour National Park. It was established in the year 1979. It caters to about 800,000 tourists every year. It has stretches of 1,969,000 ft. (600,200 m) of marked pedestrian tracks. The park is rich in flora and fauna. A huge variety of species can be found here. There are holm oak trees, Mediterranean olive trees, firs, rhododendrons spruces, Swiss pine trees. Mercantour National Park is has about 2,000 species of flowering plants, and rare ones at that, such as edelweiss and martagon lily, houseleek, moss campion, and the likes. Chamois and marmots can be frequently spotted. The ermine, ibex and the mouflon is rarer and not visible easily. Wildlife consists of Red Deer and Roe Deer in the shallow grass areas. Numerous hares and wild boars, partridges, Golden Eagles and Buzzards, various species of butterflies and even about 50 Italian Wolves – who migrated in the early nineties. • The landscape is very beautiful and spectacular with the canyons. Special end of June / beginning of July. It blooms about and we were able to observe many different wildlife (Chamois, marmots, eagles,...). The people are very friendly and the food is fantastic. French language skills are of advantage, nevertheless we repeatedly encountered locals who spoke good English and some even German. Unfortunately, we have removed nothing despite week-long hike. We were with a donkey on the road and have stayed in small hotels, guesthouses, cottages and even private homes. A really wonderful holiday in nature with great recreational value.
