Phare de Saint Mathieu, Plougonvelin

4.7
The Saint-Mathieu lighthouse is a lighthouse located on Pointe Saint-Mathieu in Plougonvelin, around Brest in Finistère. The lighthouse is open to the public.Saint-Mathieu was built in 1835 among the ruins of the ancient Abbaye Saint-Mathieu de Fine-Terre. It is a major lighthouse of the French coast, with a theoretical range of 29 nautical miles (around 55 km).Along with the Kermorvan, it signals the direction of the Chenal du Four, which transient ships used to follow on a north-south axis before the creation of the Rail d'Ouessant. Saint-Mathieu’s alignment with the Portzic lighthouse also indicates the route for entrance to the Goulet de Brest. It was classified as a monument historique on 23 May 2011.HistoryThe promontory of Saint-Mathieu hosts the ruins of an abbey, a sémpahore, and a lighthouse. This bizarre juxtaposition (some suggestions were made to restore the abbey, while deconstructing the lighthouse and rebuilding it elsewhere) is explained by the connections these structures shared throughout Saint-Mathieu’s history.First lighthouseThere had long been a light signal for navigating ships before the Saint-Mathieu lighthouse. The end of the 17th century, however, brought with it a need for accessibility to a new naval base in Brest and the necessity of more serious methods of navigation for western Brittany.

The tour was very nice although the last steps are not easy to set up and even harder to go down to the last staircase. However it's worth because it has a very nice view. The staff is very friendly and very welcoming.

A beautiful lighthouse at the tip of Saint Mathieu that rises amidst the ruins of an ancient Abbey, which has taken over, so to speak, given that in the past were the monks to keep alive the fires that warned sailors of the hazards of navigation in those places. A very interesting visit and a poetic place. Weather permitting, the lighthouse can be climbed, to enjoy a fantastic view over the whole area, hearing, under the Ocean screaming. There is also a small museum showing the history of the place.

Beautiful lighthouse with a wonderful view. Also visiting the Museum at the foot of the lighthouse and watch the movie that explains the origin of the Abbey at the foot of the lighthouse
