Chateau Fort de Pirou comes with its own legend. When the castle was besieged by the Normans in the Middle Ages, the lord of Chateau Fort de Pirou and his family used an old wizard's book to turn themselves into geese and escape during the assault. Unfortunately, when they tried to reverse the spell a few days later, they realized the book had burned along with the castle. To this day, wild geese still alight here every year in March during their annual migration--and those who believe the legend think they know why. While the legend probably isn't true, what we do know for sure is that the structure was initially built of wood, and later stone, in the 12th century. It's location near the English Channel made it ideal for watching the coast for invasion. In the 18th century, the castle became a farm. Then the government renovated it in the 20th century and opened to the public as a historic monument.
Le chemin de r... more »We visited this castle in the rain on August 30. And yes it's Normandy. Friendly staff. The castle is very well restored. Parts lack a bit of staging. The coastal path is a must and the view from the tower to take your breath away. Allow an hour. Very nice wallets in the shop!
On accède à ce château fort médiéval du XIIè par un pont de pierre et une succession de 3 portes fortifiées. In the barnyard stand the buildings which housed the bakery, recognizable by his monumental four, the press, the Chapel and the room of the pleadings, temporary exhibition of a contemporary tapestry inspired by that of Bayeux, which It remains to demonstrate the interest despite the respect that deserves this work of patience... Externally, the whole Castle, surrounded by water, is quite impressive and relatively well preserved. The rooms inside the Castle are not furnished, but the turn of the ramparts, followed of the climb to the top of the tower is worth for the nice look of the surrounding area. Without being exceptional, this castle can be a visit if we move in the region.
Amazing place. Very nice way you move around a planned route and can read up on the historical use
Fabulous time, excellent staff and the château is gorgeous even if small. Well worth a visit.
Very nice place.
Interesting inner buildings
The castle must be certainly beautiful and pretty, yet would have to visit it. It is lamentable that a tourist site like this is closed one day midweek in high tourist season. Again, another day perhaps. 🙁😠
