#2 of 17 in Things to do in Perigueux
Built around the ruins of a first-century Roman home, Vesunna Gallo-Roman Museum preserves and protects this piece of history, while educating visitors about era. The home and several artifacts from daily life were discovered in 1959. The museum--a glass and steel structure with an umbrella-like roof--opened in 2003. From raised catwalks, you can see models and descriptions of what the house looked like in its heyday. You also can learn about the Roman city that once existed here. • I was skeptical at first when I read something by "unique" in the flyer. Finally, I have visited many sites. But the exhibition is worthwhile in any case. The audio guide will informative guide through the exhibition, additional background information and enables so a good idea of the gallo Roman life and the changes. Who knows much about the lifestyle of the Romans, can skip the parts such as the heating system, and is still much new.

  • We spent 90 minutes in this bright and airy architecture Museum. We take pleasure in strolling on gateways allowing us to discover the universe of vesunna. I loved discover jewellery and their heating technique. You learn a lot of things. One small problem we would have liked that proposed us the audioguide that would have added to visit most.

  • A great museum with multi-language audio guide. The modern cover building shelters you from all weathers. Very well preserved walls give you a real impression of how massive this house once was. Lacking in situ floors and mosaics but this is a minor point hence still giving it 5 stars. 2 hours should be enough time to see everything on display
  • Great if you speak French, no translation in English, except for a short movie that is played in the corner of the huge room on the left hand side when you enter the museum (alt. in English and French). I would advise any English speaker to start with the video since it explains the main building stages and the layout of the house. I think the museum should at least prepare a small leaflet in English for foreign visitors
  • Audio guide is a must. Excellent museum & exhibits. Very evocative & informative.
  • If you are anywhere close, you must tour Vesunna. Highlight of our trip. Be sure to get the audio guided tour.
  • Excellent museum, built around an archeological site. It elaborates on the roman history of Peregueux by analysing a domus of which parts were discovered.
