Founded in 1835, Périgord Museum of Art and Archaeology functions as a site dedicated to archeology and ethnography. The museum has more than 2 km (1.2 miles) of permanent exhibitions showing about a tenth of its 45,000 works. Highlights include the fossil skeleton from Regourdou (a 90,000-year-old Neanderthal) and engraved reindeer from Limeuil. In 1857, the museum began to feature fine art--the current collection includes paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, and architectural pieces, arranged by century. • Although it lacks a little unit the Museum of Périgueux has some great discoveries, not to be missed. The most interesting rooms and best documented are those devoted to prehistory and human presence in the region, with detailed and clear cartels, and many objects originals and reproductions. In the courtyard you can admire some Romanesque capitals and sculptures of the Cathedral Saint-Front, who miraculously escaped the abusive 'reconstruction' by the architect Abadie in the XIX. Another object of curiosity Ethnography rooms, with a large fund bequeathed by several local collectors. Paint rooms are not particularly conspicuous by their quality; However, they are home to a rare sedan in good condition Chair.

  • Nice visit with a lot of (re) discovered. Nice to walk through the Museum and answer riddles thematic booklets. The kids enjoy and parents, too. It's fun.

  • Not too warm welcomed, but the structure organizes plenty of activities with kids
  • The only true disappointment in our three weekly visit at the Dordogne. The collection is shown in the most chaotic way you could imagine, in a really neglected building. What a mess. Too bad, because the collection itself is worthwile and varies from prehistoric to more modern objects. We sadly discovered more than one object is a copy or even a bad photograph however (i.e. blueprint drawing by architect Breuilh), where the originals are kept in other musea. If we had known all this we would have spent our time elsewhere.
  • The museum itself, is somewhat stripped by Vesunna. Also a redeployment must be ongoing. Fortunately, the visit with a guide is informative (certainly PhD). Above all, that the guide is fully operational for the boeotians and further questions. In short, to book to the initiated by letting families outside.

  • Impressive façade. Not visited. Neighborhood offering possibility to park and explore the city on foot.
