Chateau Pontet-Canet, Pauillac

4.5
#2 of 8 in Things to do in Pauillac
Tour Chateau Pontet-Canet to see the estate and sample its eponymous organic red wine. The wines here are produced with old-fashioned flair: harvesting is done by hand, and after sorting, the grapes are moved into the estate's gravity-fed cellars for crushing. Fermentation takes place in a mixture of concrete and stainless-steel vats. Wines are aged for 16-20 months in up to 60 percent new oak barrels. • We visited Chateau Pontet-Canet during a 5 day bike tour of Bordeaux, and had stopped at Chateau Pichon Baron the previous day. In my review of the latter I suggested it perhaps provided a glimpse int...  more »
  • Visit the Château Pontet Canet and we had a wonderful reception. In addition to the whole history of the Château were able to meet the changes that are being promoted to become increasingly integrated production on the environment. It follows the concept of biodynamic production there.

  • We had a really good tour at this Chateau and enjoyed the wine tasting. The tour was extremely interesting and informative and, of course, the wine is superb!  more »

  • Picking grapes there in 1990. That was a fantastic year. Hard work.
  • Visited in May 2016 without reservation: recommended by the nearby Château Lynch-Bages, we crashed a small tour in French and explored the whole estate, fromthe vineyard to the machinery and the cellar. At the end of the tour we were offered a taste of the final product, from bottles worth at least 80-100 euro. It's a smaller (although very impressive) family-owned château and their method is biodynamic, meaning the wine is not just organic but nature has been encouraged to work for it (like bees for pollination, lunar calendar, etc). I could not recommended it enough.
  • If you make an appointment in advance, you'll be able to get a tour in English to check out Pontet Canet. Chateau Pontet Canet is classified as part of Fifth Growth in the Bordeaux Wine Classification of 1855 (Pauillac's appellation), but Pontet Canet is at times better than the other wineries that's classified first, second, or third. Today's tour (Sept 2014) included a tasting of their 2007's vintage and a view around their vineyard, VAT, Cellar, and tasting room. The best part is that the tour goes in depth about the history and their operational point of view of Pontet Canet. Plus, the tour and tasting is free! Pontet Canet also invented (patent pending) on their new VAT, which reminds of Big Hero 6 from Disney! Pontet Canet's wine is a bit pricey and there's a reason why....certified organic and biodynamic! Overall, Pontet Canet is a must stop to check out how the wineries are changing their ways back to biodynamic with a lighter touch to the vines. Perhaps it's because of Pontet Canet's drive is the reason why they recently lost their AOC status for their second label. Or perhaps, it's wine politic? Who knows and it's quite unfortunate! Regardless of status, I was thoroughly impressed by their passion, keep up the good work Pontet Canet!
  • Super
  • Very nice place and very nice visit. Very friendly staff. One of the only (see only) field among the big thought from the Médoc to be certified organic. Congratulations! If helpful, thanks for putting a 👍
