Fountain Tourist Spot
Also known as the Fontaine de la place Saint-Sulpice or as the Fontaine des Orateurs-Sacré, St. Sulpice Fountain is a monumental fountain you can find located in Place Saint-Sulpice. It was constructed between 1843 and 1848 by the architect Louis Visconti, who also designed the tomb of Napoleon.

Four figures stand prominent on the fountain and represent four French religious figures of the 17th century famous for their eloquence, including Bossuet, Fénelon, Fléchier, and Massillon. The fountain was criticized when it opened, because of the incoherence of the iconography and details. One critic noted that the vases pouring water were "veritable cooking pots." Describing the lions, another critic wrote that "everything about them shows their irritation at the water pouring onto their rear ends."

Upon visiting this large, impressive fountain, you can decide for yourself just how magnificent the landmark is. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to St. Sulpice Fountain by using our Paris itinerary planner.

  • We picked up some wine and lunch and ate in the park and felt very Parisian. Beutiful fountain and lovely church. Peaceful area. Not very crowded  more »
  • Fountain, located at the front of the Saint-Sulpice church, under Church just for 200 years. 'Ve read that not all Parisians are thrilled by the fountain, called them "four of the Bishop". But we mere tourists, a fountain like and thought he did not spoil the architectural ensemble of the square in front of the Church and makes no dissonance. Of course, how many people-many opinions ... Has the right to his own opinion and tourists. Us, for example, the fountain seemed quite nice ....

  • A short walk north from the Luxembourg Gardens and Saint-Sulpice church. Church is a building of twin towers like the Notre Dame Cathedral. There is a fountain in the front.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
