Also known as the Fontaine de la place Saint-Sulpice or as the Fontaine des Orateurs-Sacré, St. Sulpice Fountain is a monumental fountain you can find located in Place Saint-Sulpice. It was constructed between 1843 and 1848 by the architect Louis Visconti, who also designed the tomb of Napoleon.

Four figures stand prominent on the fountain and represent four French religious figures of the 17th century famous for their eloquence, including Bossuet, Fénelon, Fléchier, and Massillon. The fountain was criticized when it opened, because of the incoherence of the iconography and details. One critic noted that the vases pouring water were "veritable cooking pots." Describing the lions, another critic wrote that "everything about them shows their irritation at the water pouring onto their rear ends."

Upon visiting this large, impressive fountain, you can decide for yourself just how magnificent the landmark is. Plan to visit St. Sulpice Fountain during your Paris vacation using our convenient Paris sightseeing site .

  • A beautiful Fountain on place Saint Sulpice facing the Church, monumental and very lively with a good flow of water and a bestiary speaking: Lions wide open mouth! So do not approach too close because they might eat you up alive. Classified historical monument is a "recent" Fountain built in the 19th century. It represents 4 bishops under the reign of Louis XIV, who never became Cardinal but known for oratorical talent. Grandeur nature and even if high perched, impressive portraits. So, if you think about it, this choice of bishops, provincial in addition, who have not progressed in the ecclesiastical hierarchy but gifted to express and deliver a message, tell us something about the world and society that transcends eras: this are these real faith, real conviction men who do not have favors and probably have nothing to do, only able to move the lines, to mobilize people, to give a course, to show the future and point hope. Disinterested necessarily men of heart above all men. So when you look at the fountain Saint Sulpice, also consider the hidden message it might conceal. Tip: take the time to make the full turn and ask you to listen to and enjoy the spectacle of water on a bench.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
