St. Sulpice Fountain, Paris
(4.3/5 based on 80+ reviews on the web)
Also known as the Fontaine de la place Saint-Sulpice or as the Fontaine des Orateurs-Sacré, St. Sulpice Fountain is a monumental fountain you can find located in Place Saint-Sulpice. It was constructed between 1843 and 1848 by the architect Louis Visconti, who also designed the tomb of Napoleon.

Four figures stand prominent on the fountain and represent four French religious figures of the 17th century famous for their eloquence, including Bossuet, Fénelon, Fléchier, and Massillon. The fountain was criticized when it opened, because of the incoherence of the iconography and details. One critic noted that the vases pouring water were "veritable cooking pots." Describing the lions, another critic wrote that "everything about them shows their irritation at the water pouring onto their rear ends."

Upon visiting this large, impressive fountain, you can decide for yourself just how magnificent the landmark is. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to St. Sulpice Fountain by using our Paris itinerary planner.

  • This is a great fountain with statues and stone lions. I particularly like the expression on the lions. There was no water running today though.
  • Imposing fountain. In the middle of three concentric basins, there are four statues representing Bossuet, Fénelon, Massillon and Flechier preachers of the time of Louis XIV. Maliciously, Parisians unfortunatelly also "Fountain of the four cardinal points" because the four bishops were never appointed Cardinals! Yet the faces of the fountain are roughly aligned with the cardinal points.

  • We took a quick photo stop here before entering the St Sulpice church for a visit. The square was relatively peaceful and not much of a crowd.
