Square de la Tour Saint-Jacques, a World Heritage Site, is all that remains of the 16th-century Church of Saint-Jacques-de-la-Boucherie, the meeting place in Paris for pilgrims heading to Santiago de Compestela. Take a guided tour of the Flamboyant Gothic tower, where you can climb the 300 stairs to the top for great views of Paris and some interesting historical information. At the base, notice the statue of Blaise Pascal, a 17th-century scientist and philosopher rumored to have conducted experiments on atmospheric pressure from the top of this tower. The Tour Saint-Jaques stands like a one fingered salute to the bustle and polution of the appalling Rue de Rivoli - a Paris street and tourist trap to be avoided at all costs (other than for a visit t...  more »

Not far from the Mayor's Office of Paris is a lonely and beautiful old Tower of Saint-Jacques, all that remains of the Church with the monastery on the road leading past the pilgrims to Saint James.

This is a quiet little park in the middle of one of my favorite parts of Paris. It is not far from the Pompidou. I did not go up in the tower but it was a nice experience all the same. There were plenty of benches to sit on with trees accompanying them to provide some shade. If the benches are full there is plenty of grass to lay on. This is a good place to read or to have picnic with friends.

Amazing place. I've found it by chance, just coming back from Notre-Dame, but it's an amazing gothic tower and worth a visit.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
