Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, Paris

(90+ reviews on the web)
Architectural Building
Founded in the seventh century, Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois is famous for its bell, Marie, which sounded on Aug. 23, 1572, marking the beginning of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. That day, a mob killed thousands of Huguenots, or French Protestants, visiting the city for a royal wedding. Despite its gory history, this church offers many beautiful things to see, including a 15th-century wooden statue of St. Germain, a stone statue of St. Vincent sculpted about the same time, a wooden Flemish altarpiece, and the famous church wardens pew, where important people sat. A visit to Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Paris travel itinerary planner to plot your vacation.

  • If you want to escape the crowds at the Louvre and just want a few moments of contemplation in a beautiful old church, why not head for this church just next door. Very beautiful and although I cannot...  more »
  • Well worth a visit. Beautiful artworks, including stained glass windows. The architecture expresses effectively the spiritual purpose of the building.  more »

  • This eye-catching church is just next to the 1st arrondissement city hall, and thus they have been using the outer grailing to showcase local photography and photographic exhibits as a sort outdoor exhibition space just across from the Louvre.
  • Went here a couple times. Once for mass and another time to hear a concert. Great venue for the concert, highly recommend. The outside of the church is highly ornate, complete with gargoyles.
  • What they could do in history is just awesome. Loved it.
  • Front view facing Louvre....breathe taking. Women Saints....outside....beautiful.
  • has a very good painting of adem and eve..
