Pont-Neuf, Paris

4.4
#17 of 96 in Historic Sites in Paris
Despite its name, Pont-Neuf is the oldest standing bridge across the river Seine in Paris. This medieval bridge has two separate spans: one with five arches joining the left bank to the Île de la Cité, and the other with seven spans joining the island to the right bank. Be sure to note the turrets, shaped like half-moons, that give the arches their characteristic appearance. Then look for grotesque masks called "mascarons" that decorate the molding cornice on each side of the bridge. The Pont Neuf is Paris oldest, longest and most famous bridge. To integrate very well in walking distance of the Louvre Museum on the Ile de la Cité with Notre Dame to the Ile Saint Louis or the Jardin you Luxembourg or along the Seine passing to the Musee d' Orsay direction of Eiffel Tower. The bridge is very well preserved. In the Middle stands the statue of Heinrich IV. Here, many traders in addition to the obligatory miniature Eiffel Tower sale also padlocks to hang these on the railing around the statue. Along with the other Neppern, it's been terribly annoying in the area of the bridge.

Despite its name it is one of the bridges really old in Paris. The entire area is very cute and worth be visited both day and night. There is both the Place Dauphine and Vert Galant, all walking park.

Beautiful view and romantic spot. Recommended for couples as this is the bridge where actually people put love padlocks. There are padlock sellers (not the cheapest you can find in Paris though) and they lend you a pen to sign your names in case you don't have it, even if you don't buy their padlock.

Very lively place. It was awesome weather on my day of visit. Group Salsa dance was really pleasing.

Nice view over the Seine. Worth checking out. Also had a few drinks there at a brasserie near the bridge.

I loved it. I was so entertained with an old guy playing french music (of course) with his loyal dog beside him and watching artists drawing, things that are really printed in my mind as one of the best memoirs

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
