Pont-Neuf, Paris

4.4
Despite its name, Pont-Neuf is the oldest standing bridge across the river Seine in Paris. This medieval bridge has two separate spans: one with five arches joining the left bank to the Île de la Cité, and the other with seven spans joining the island to the right bank. Be sure to note the turrets, shaped like half-moons, that give the arches their characteristic appearance. Then look for grotesque masks called "mascarons" that decorate the molding cornice on each side of the bridge. • We walked across this bridge while strolling along the Seine. It has some interesting old lamp posts and there are some built in benches. On the side opposite from the one we were on there was one of ...  more »

  • This famous bridge is in a great position to view a lot of the Paris skyline. You can see the Eiffel Tower and all along the Seine as it splits for the island in the middle. Famous for all the locks a...  more »

  • Old and romantic bridge. Look for vendors that sell locks - you can put one and write yours and your lovers names and attach to the fence surrounding a statue on the island side. Who knows how long it will last as the Pont Des Artes had all of the locks removed - 45 tons worth. These locks are showing up on most of Paris' bridges. Enjoy the romance of the moment!
  • Beautiful view and romantic spot. Recommended for couples as this is the bridge where actually people put love padlocks. There are padlock sellers (not the cheapest you can find in Paris though) and they lend you a pen to sign your names in case you don't have it, even if you don't buy their padlock.
  • Historic bridge with beautiful views over the Seine in the city centre
  • Very lively place. It was awesome weather on my day of visit. Group Salsa dance was really pleasing.
  • Nice view over the Seine. Worth checking out. Also had a few drinks there at a brasserie near the bridge.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
