Place Vendome, Paris

4.3
#112 of 2,001 in Things to do in Paris
Place Vendome is the centerpiece of a magnificent eight-sided square, first laid out in 1699 to show off an equestrian statue of Louis XIV. The statue was removed amid revolutionary fervor in 1792, and replaced in 1806 with the Colonne de la Grande Armée. This was modeled on Trajan's column in Rome, and decorated with Napoleon's military exploits. The present column is a replica, however, as the original was pulled down during the 1871 Paris Commune. This square represents the best of well-heeled Paris, and is home to an abundance of exclusive boutiques, jewelers, and fashion labels, including Cartier, Boucheron, Trussardi, van Cleef & Arpels, along with several banks, the French Ministry of Justice, and the Ritz Hotel. • For holidays or events there are often decorations on this square. It is beautiful from the 17 th century. Mostly jewelry stores today and the original one called Chanel !!!  more »
  • By entering the marketplace: a feeling of fullness, the impression that time stops. Calm reigns. Van Cleef & Arpeels, Boucheron, the Ritz, the Department of Justice, etc. As beauties km2 (Tuileries, Rivoli, Concorde, Vendôme)

  • Just like the rest of Central Paris this place is amazing. Do you look at the stunning architecture, the amazing craftsmanship, the impressive statue in the centre or the expensive retail shops? Just watch out for the cars
  • It is a very nice square, with a very beautiful and expensive hotel "Ritz" at the right side of the square. Many kings, stars and popular persons stayed there, in this nice hotel. There are many tourists there also. I hope I would be there once more!!)
  • The place is regal and charming at the same time. Close to Opera and rue St honoré it makes a good photo opportunity.
  • A cornerstone of Paris monuments, very quiet at night. Great to visit then.
  • Extremely elegant square, magnificent architecture, full of high end shopping brands.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
