The Place du Châtelet is a public square in Paris, on the right bank of the river Seine, on the borderline between the 1st and 4th arrondissements. It lies at the north end of the Pont au Change, a bridge that connects the Île de la Cité, near the Palais de Justice and the Conciergerie, to the right bank. The closest métro station is Châtelet 15px 15px 15px 15px 15px 15pxFeaturesThe name "Châtelet" refers to the stronghold, the Grand Châtelet, that guarded the northern end of the Pont au Change, containing the offices of the prévôt de Paris and a number of prisons, until it was demolished from 1802-10.At the square's center is the Fontaine du Palmier, designed in 1806 by architect and engineer François-Jean Bralle (1750-1832) to celebrate French victories in battle. It has a circular basin, 6m in diameter, from which a column rises in the form of a palm tree's trunk 18m tall. The palm trunk is surmounted by a gilded figure of the goddess, Victory, holding a laurel wreath in each upraised hand; the goddess figure stands on a base ornamented with bas-relief eagles. The gilded finial is by sculptor Louis-Simon Boizot.

  • Interesting historically. Not everyone knows that in this place there was a fortress-prison Chatelet much more bleak "Fame" than the more famous Bastille. The fortress was demolished by Napoleon, who in this place created a. The coolest part of it is the fountain of Palmier in the form of columns propped by Sphinxes. On the Obelisk are listed the place of Napoleon's victories before 1808. The top spot is Gdańsk (!) which commemorates the successful siege of 1807. Cool place though the image this square Mars huge traffic.

  • This place is a strategic Center to visit many of the buildings (hotel city, Concierge, tour Saint-Jacques, our Lady, Holy Chapel...) It is decorated in its Center by a nice Egyptian style fountain topped by a column.

  • We went back to this place attracted by the fountain which was water, which was quite rare so far. The fountain is round with pools and the "sphinx" spitting water. This is to remind the return to Egypt of Napoleon in 1808. The ornate column in the middle is engraved battles of Napoleon such as "Dantzick" "Ulm" "Marengo", and also that of the pyramids, etc. it is topped with an allegorical statue of victory in gilded bronze. This place isn't really a resting place by the movement of cars on the roads that surround it. However stick under the shades of this small space, we can enjoy the view of the fountain and the noise of water flowing Sphinxes. A newsstand is also close to the metro station. Can sit awhile and then take the metro to "Châtelet" station on the site. Similarly, in front there is the "theatre of Châtelet" which always offers remarkable and prestigious events. On the other side, the "Theatre of the city" is very diverse in its programming. Many cafes with terrace are located around the square where you can hang out with a drink. The proximity of the Seine and the bridge to the Exchange to spend on the île de la Cité and the left bank, gives this place a character in place of visit you for the visit from the center of Paris. The view on the Concierge is also notable from the Place. Street Saint Denis and the Forum des Halles are also close to this place to the North. She is one of the major hubs of Paris.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
