Place des Vosges, Paris

#28 of 2,044 in Things to do in Paris
The oldest planned square in Paris, Place des Vosges is a quiet spot surrounded by cafes and shops. Listen to the trickle of water from one of the four fountains while sitting at a bench. Henri IV built this perfect square 140 sq m (460 sq ft) from 1605 to 1612 to use as a royal pavilion for duels. Green lawns radiate out from its center. Expertly manicured lindens surround a formal plantation of mature linden trees called a bosquet, which provide a shady oasis. • Super nice place to picnic in the square' s park. Around the square there is art (not landscapes) for sale in high end dealers shops. Several places to eat. Didn't try the food, but the places were pretty full so in letting the people vote, I'd say that they must have good food. I looked at a menu, great variety, costing around 30 Euros for lunch.
  • A tranquil and beautiful park. Surprisingly not busy. Four fountains, benches to sit on and watch the pigeons go about their business, and I found €20 on the ground! (Can’t guarantee that for everyone.) But I can guarantee that it’ll be a peaceful place to rest your feet after walking through Le Marais.
  • One of the oldest areas on France. Beautiful buildings, a play structure with tons of shade that my 5 and 7 year old were able to play under even in the rain. Would be great for any weather. Could go for a couple's picnic, outdoor kid time or for the art galleries and food. Absolutely lovely. It would be a 5 star in any other city but I have to reserve those in Paris for the very best.
  • The experience was not that great but the people who were serving us were nice. We ordered medium rare for our formule main course but mine was into the rare side so I switched mine with my boyfriend who enjoyed it. The place was neat. Only 3 stars because it was not as we expected it. We were not blown away by the whole experience.
  • Beautiful park/courtyard along with shops and restaurants within the square. We relaxed on the lawn by the fountain, milled around the different art stores. Home of Victor Hugo is in one of the corners. Wonderful place to relax. Several small openings to explore with beautiful gardens.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
