Parc des Buttes Chaumont, Paris

(1,400+ reviews on the web)
Nature / Park
Wander around the lush green paradise of Parc des Buttes Chaumont. This is the largest, hilliest, and least touristed park in Paris, where you'll find a real Parisian atmosphere. Climb to the top of the hill and overlook the north of Paris, with Montmartre before you. Walk over a suspension bridge to reach a decorative temple, which sits atop a steep cliff. The park has a waterfall fed by a natural spring deep underground, which flows into a lake. • It was absolutely amazing!! Especially the getting locked inside part of our visit...There was no "10 minute warning" sound before all the gates were locked, and my companion and I were locked inside with DOZENS of others; we were forced to climb over the fence, which is NOT EASY TO DO unless you happen to be a gymnast or an acrobat...I would visit (and be locked in) again each time I visit this wonderful city. Just remember that CLOSING TIME MEANS CLOSED SO GET OUT BEFORE you're padlocked inside!
  • Ran into some awesome, fun Parisians who told us the park's history. It was a mine hole and almost became a landfill to be covered over until an architect laid out plans to make this amazing park. 100% man made and gorgeous.
  • Lovely park to walk around, nice to sit by the water and people watch or up on the hill overlooking the city. Good place to bring a picnic. Lovely place to go for a run
  • One of the coolest park inside Paris. It's big, it has lawns, brooks, a lake with a fake mountain in the middle. And ducks!
  • This is one of the best parks in Paris! Built in the 19th century by Napoleon III in a disused quarry. It has by far the most dramatic landscaping you'll find in town. There are waterfalls in an artificial cave several storeys high and brooks and rivulets leading down the steep hills. You can walk out to a belvedere for a unique view over northern Paris, most viewing points in the city look toward the Eiffel Tower and downtown. The place is full of flowers and in the summer, they keep it open all night. Popular spot for evening picnics. Allowing your dog off leash is prohibited, but there are a few areas where it won't bother anyone, especially during the cold months. Sunny weather brings out lots of runners and big crowds of people strolling, but it's all very friendly. Often you can see wedding parties taking photos around the shallow duck pond. Fenced off area for people practicing Tai chi and other martial arts. Pétanque just outside the park at the high end. Pony rides for children. Plenty of drinking fountains and a public toilet.
