Palais de Chaillot, Paris

4.3
#34 of 126 in Museums in Paris
Specialty Museum Museum
For the Exposition Internationale of 1937, the old Palais du Trocadéro (built about 50 years earlier) was demolished and replaced by Palais de Chaillot. Quotations by Paul Valéry decorate the building, alongside sculptural groups on the attic level by Raymond Delamarre, Carlo Sarrabezolles, and Alfred Bottiau. Admire the eight gilded figures sitting on the Rights of Man terrace, attributed to the sculptors Alexandre Descatoire, Marcel Gimond, Jean Paris dit Pryas, Paul Cornet, Lucien Brasseur, Robert Couturier, Paul Niclausse, and Félix-Alexandre Desruelles. This building houses Musée National de la Marine (naval museum), Musée de l'Homme (ethnology), and Musée National des Monuments Français. It's also famous for hosting the United Nations General Assembly that adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on December 10, 1948. Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.

  • Incredible place, very close to the Eiffel tower. The perfect visit to the Eiffel tower starts there.
  • A complimenting structure to spread a red (green!) carpet for a great monument
  • One of the "must see" places in Paris. Monumental palace with best view to Eiffel tower.
  • A nice elevated place to get a good picture of "Ze Eiffel To-ur". Beware of con-men here. There were a couple of groups playing the 3 cups and a ball game. From a far you can see the trick is easy and many people getting it wrong. Everyone there are in on it. They will try every method to try to get you to join in. Don't take out any cash. Ever. Just walk away. They tried giving me a €100 euros after I won a "free" guess. Didn't touch it and walked off.
  • Great place to shot the Effie Tower which avoid the crowds in the other side.
