Museum of Romantic Life, Paris

3.7
#46 of 148 in Museums in Paris
Devoted to the artists, writers, and composers of the Romantic period, Museum of Romantic Life was the Paris base of Dutch-born painter Ary Scheffer (1795–1858). For decades, Scheffer and his daughter hosted Friday evening salons, attracting the likes of George Sand, Frederic Chopin, Eugène Delacroix, Franz Liszt, Gioacchino Rossini, and singer Pauline Viardot. Later in the century, Charles Dickens, Ivan Turgueniev, and Charles Gounod attended regularly. The museum displays numerous mementos of these luminaries, as well as Romantic-era paintings, sculptures, and objets d'art. We found this place almost boring and over priced. There is no catering for English speaking guests and as such we completely wasted our money. Even the people at the entrance spoke no English.  more »

I found if I was walking way from Montmartre, art. Retreat on the lovely tree-lined street from the entrance. And once inside, there were a Le date roses picture. In another room, and hand-shaped portrait of George sand, Chopin, is interesting. I am the one who was the Asians, even becoming tourist site. Local Madame who were enjoying the afternoon. The garden was beautiful.

Very nice houses complex with courtyard garden. There are wonderful drawings and paintings of flowers and floral patterns, even porcelain and upholstery with floral pattern. It's not too bombastic and very enjoyable and varied. You can also enjoy a drink in the garden and small matter against democratic price. Good foot from Pigalle metro stop.

A cute and very small museum. There are 3 buildings you go in. They are not big. I really enjoyed The 2nd and 3rd building. The contrast between modern art and antique is really nice. If you are a student under 26 don't forget to mention that. When buying the ticket.

Some say it was free, but the ticket was 8 euro which was not bad. It is not a big museum but it has its charm. It was great to see how some went to great lengths to bring back beautiful flowers for others to create paintings, wall paper and fabrics. Tea shop has good lite food (salad, coffee, teas, yogurt, etc..) and seating in the garden. Entire viewing of the museum was under an hour.

Achingly beautiful hidden tea garden. Simple menu, light salads, quiches, simple sweets including a raspberry tart the day I went. Coffees are also on the menu, along with a selection of Angelina teas. Rarely do you find a free museum in Paris, the tea garden is very reasonably priced as well. The museum is only 8 rooms...focusing mainly on personal, sentimental, items of George Sand. Lovely casting of Chopin's hand. My visit was right before the beginning of spring, 2017

Beautiful garden, charming house. Current new exhibits are mixed with the old ones in a most harmonious way! One of the best experience.

8 euroes to visit 3 museums that altogether totalled to less than a room in the louvre. granted the pictures of plants were beautiful but no english guide was given and everything was in french. For plant enthusiasts, you will like it but for tourists who come to have a look at romantic life, bear in mind its not the lovey dovey kind of romantic.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
