Montparnasse, Paris

4.1
Once a labyrinth filled with artists' studios and roaring cafes, most of Montparnasse was flattened during the 1960s to accommodate a train station and Tour Montparnasse, the only skyscraper in the main part of Paris. Over recent years, the area has evolved into a neighborhood where you can find reasonable short-term rentals, budget cafes, and a down-to-earth vibe that's missing from many of the trendier neighborhoods. Using our international travel planner, Paris attractions like Montparnasse can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • Nice neighborhood in Paris where I visited the montparnasse skyscraper. You climb in 38 seconds up to 56th floor where you will find a souvenir then take a staircase and arrive on the terrace at 59° floor with panorama of Paris

  • The Montparnasse district, is located on the left bank of the river Seine in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, is a little away from the main tourist attractions of Paris. The neighborhood with many hotels, restaurants, coffee shops and has a good nightlife with its theatres and cinemas. There are some tourist attractions, the cemetery Montparnasse, the Montsouris Park, the Paris Observatory, the Denfert-Rochereau square, the Catacombes de Paris (tunnels) and the 210 m skyscraper, Tour Montparnasse.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
