Medici Fountain, Paris

4.7
#318 of 1,567 in Things to do in Paris
Now a beautiful attraction in Paris, Medici Fountain was originally created in the 17th century at the Luxembourg gardens for Maria de' Medici, Queen of France. You can visit this site and admire the romantic fountain in a peaceful atmosphere. The grotto fountain is adorned with columns and completely covered with reliefs that simulate water seeping from rock walls.

The fountain is also decorated with allegorical statues, which were added much later. The first statue, Venus in the center niche, is now replaced by the mythological figures of the lovers Acis and Galatea in white Carrara marble. The jealous Cyclops statue, Polyphemus, observes the couple from a ledge. Brush up on your mythology before you arrive to really enjoy these artistic stories. Very pretty fountain in a small nook. Very relaxing and romantic. Remote, quiet. I recommend.

We entered the gardens on the east end beside this fountain. While much of the gardens were open, this area was heavily shaded by huge trees and magnificent trellis work. The fountain was nice but it ...  more »

This is a beautiful fountain tucked away in a part of the Luxembourg gardens. The soothing sound of trickling water and the benches make it a great place to take a few moments to relax or eat a sandwich. The statues are full of emotion and well worth a visit.

A peaceful respite in the busy city. We almost missed this on our walk through the gardens.

A beautiful fountain given to Paris as a gift from Italy (so I've heard) Quiet water you can meditate near, with a shaded area secluded from the park's noise.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
