Medici Fountain, Paris

4.7
#345 of 2,039 in Things to do in Paris
Now a beautiful attraction in Paris, Medici Fountain was originally created in the 17th century at the Luxembourg gardens for Maria de' Medici, Queen of France. You can visit this site and admire the romantic fountain in a peaceful atmosphere. The grotto fountain is adorned with columns and completely covered with reliefs that simulate water seeping from rock walls.

The fountain is also decorated with allegorical statues, which were added much later. The first statue, Venus in the center niche, is now replaced by the mythological figures of the lovers Acis and Galatea in white Carrara marble. The jealous Cyclops statue, Polyphemus, observes the couple from a ledge. Brush up on your mythology before you arrive to really enjoy these artistic stories. • In the Luxembourg Gardens behind the Palace is a beautiful Parisian fountain-the fountain of the Medicis (La fontaine Médicis) decorated in Italian style in 1624 g. Fountain on a plot of legends about Galatee was infatuated with Cyclops Polyphemus (son of Poseidon). The nymph was a crush on ' Aqeedah and rejected the Polyphemus. Polyphemus slew Aqeedah by rocks, and Galatea turned lover into the river. After the death of Maria de ' Medici (through 21) Fountain, like the Palace, came to desolation. Modern view of fountain purchased in 19 century. To the fountain was added to their white marble Galatea, lying in the embrace of ' Aqeedah, and bronze Cyclops looming over the couple. On the other hand the Grotto there is another fountain, Bas-relief Leda and the Swan.

  • This is a beautiful fountain tucked away in a part of the Luxembourg gardens. The soothing sound of trickling water and the benches make it a great place to take a few moments to relax or eat a sandwich. The statues are full of emotion and well worth a visit.
  • Calm and pleasant place where you can re-charge after busy day in Paris.
  • Just splendid. Go.
  • Very beautiful fountain !!!
  • A peaceful respite in the busy city. We almost missed this on our walk through the gardens.

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
