Maison Européenne de la Photographie, located in the historic heart of Paris, is a major center for contemporary photographic art. A piece of heaven for any photographer or fan, this site houses an exhibition center, a large library, an auditorium, and a video viewing facility with a wide selection of films. You can even enjoy the Café under the 18th century vaults and a specialized bookstore. Maison Européenne de la Photographie is designed to make the three fundamental photographic media, including exhibition prints, the printed page, and film, easily accessible to you.

The collection owns about 20,000 works of art, consisting of mostly photographs and videos. The library also gathers volumes about photography, artists’ books, and technical or theoretical works, including rare editions. Special exhibitions are organized every year about artists, themes, and movements that mainly belong to the second halves of the 20th and 21st centuries. • We loved this museum! The exhibits ranged from the classic to the eclectic. We went on a Saturday in January, with a minimal wait (under 5 minutes) to get in. No need to pre-purchase tickets, as this ...  more »
  • The exhibits and photographs deserve to be seen if you are interested in photography! Some jobs are worth much more than others.

  • This is an art gallery first, and not a photography exhibition. Those looking for the latter may be disappointed. Lovely building but I really didn't enjoy the exhibitions which were far too arty for my uncultured mind.
  • They had a very visceral gallery of new Delhi when I was there that, as someone who cares for the struggles of the third word and has been to delhi, can really relate to on every level. It was also fun to see what the French point of view was like and I could tell this from the photographer's shots and explanations. Their permanent galleries are also really good. Invokes a wide variety of different emotions and political ideologies. Great place for a socially conscious person to visit!
  • I love this place. A bit of a labyrinth at first, with more rooms downstairs that are easy to miss. Comfortable and very quiet library, just not the friendliest of librarians (have a tendency to close earlier than it says ont he door).
  • It's rare to move someone's heart and inspire these days. This museum simply does the both of them.
  • Best photo exhibitions at the heart of the city. What looks like a small modern place from the outside, reveals grand old town house with all it's charmes. Wednesdays free afternoons

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
