Lac des Minimes, Paris

4.8
#8 of 8 in Nature in Paris
Relax during a leisurely stroll at Lac des Minimes, an artificial lake in Bois de Vincennes. The crescent-shaped body of water covers 6 hectares (15 acres) and features three scenic islands. Set in a large green park with many old trees, the area offers scenic views and shelters families of ducks, squirrels, and even herons. Built upon the former 12th-century convent area of the Roman Catholic Order of Minims, the area was filled by water from Marne River in 1866. Get out on the lake with a paddleboat rental. • Located in front of the INSEP, Minimes Lake is the 2nd spot of rental boats in the bois de Vincennes. These are flat and plastic, they are much lighter and faster than their equivalents of the Lake Daumesnil, but also less expensive. The course includes 3 impassable Islands, and is more varied: cascades, scopes larger and quieter, trunks of trees at the top of the water. Wildlife is as rich and varied as the Daumesnil. A moment of freshness when summer is untenable. Closed from late November to early March. School period: Wednesday, Saturday and holidays: 13:30-7:30 pm, Sunday: 11: 00 - 19:30 school holidays: open every day from 13:30 to 19:30, Sunday from 11 h to 19 h 30 rates for 1 h: €10 for 1 or 2 persons - € 12 for 3, 4 or 5 persons - bail: €10. Pets allowed.

  • Minimes Lake, is located to the East of the castle of Vincennes, to Nogent Sur Marne. It is bean shaped with small islands of greenery, including one in the North, near the D120, avenue of Nogent, is occupied by the cottage of the yellow door, which dates back to Napoleon III. The pedestrian route of the Grand prior, runs along the entire West of the Lake and allows you to walk in a very pleasant setting. There are also quite benches for resting. Side West, 2 houses so-called "Red houses" neo-Louis XIII style, have parks designed for children with a beautiful floral decorations. They are accessible by road from the field of Manoeuvre. The name of the Lake comes from what it has been created on the site of a former convent of the religious of the order of hermits beggars said "Order of Minims". It was created at the same time as the bois de Vincennes under Napoleon III to 1859 under the direction of the architect Jean Charles Alphand. It is fed by a small river coming from the Gravelle, called "River of Joinville" Lake saw lots of wildlife around the Lake and in particular on the two islets woodlots, forbidden to visit, such as nature reserve, such as moorhens, coots, ducks, geese the Canada geese, swans, etc. Fish also live in the lake where one can err in line, some Pikes, carps, crucians, Roach, perch, bream, etc I love walking around this lake which is more quiet as that of Daumesnil, and come spring, has beautiful colors by many species of trees that populate the landscape. It is accessible by the RER A "Canada" station which is located to the East of the Lake at about 1200 m. Buses run on the D120 No. 114 and 210 from the castle of Vincennes, get off at the station "Yellow door"

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
