Jardin du Palais Royal, Paris

4.5
#12 of 75 in Parks in Paris
Cardinal de Richelieu, the prime minister for King Louis XIII, commissioned the construction of the palace surrounding Jardin du Palais Royal in 1629. These gardens, enclosed within the walls of the palace, were first opened to the public in the 18th century. There are numerous restaurants inside the gardens, including famous Le Grand Véfour. Seek out the controversial modern art piece Colonnes de Buren, installed within the interior courtyard. Jardin du Palais Royal is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Paris Edition.

  • We have completely visited this historic site, constituting a pleasant walking area, that we already knew. We have made the first step of a tour of the passages covered in this neighborhood. Thanks to a very interesting speaker, our group of an association of our city was able, first, discover this former place of pleasures (of the game, of the flesh...) at the time of Louis XVI. Before you work through the passage Véro Dodat, Vivienne, Colbert, Choiseul, we are stopped. There is more covered walkway but between the gardens and the Court where the columns of Buren, stores of wood between the colonnades were built. The developer was Louis - Philippe of Orléans, said Philippe Egalité after the Revolution. A canopy that no longer exists was installed, above, between the columns. I recommend our speaker, Juliette Arsène-Henry, historian of art (lesconferencieres.com).

  • A beautiful, quiet place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of Paris. Not much in the way of amenities but perfect for a stroll and plenty of places to sit and relax. A nice stop off whilst ex...  more »

  • Jardin du Palais Royal is a short stroll from the Louvre and surrounded by a superb revolutionary architecture. Jardin du Palais Royal has extensive walking space. This is a perfect spot to relax and enjoy your time. There are sculptures and benches everywhere so you can sit and adore the scenery. There are black and white pillars at the end which is very photographic.
  • Beautiful area to walk through or to enjoy a coffee from one of the many cafes situated at the side of the park. Go to the end for some good photo opportunities on the black and white pillars.
  • A charming park to stroll through. Don't forget to look at the columns in the palais.
  • Super relaxing. Unknown to many people but so beautiful especially in the summer season. I have the luck to work nearby and this is awesome at lunch time when people go there to tan and have fun at their break. In winter it is also nice but very cold.
  • Wide walking area with benches. Closed out and modern. Gardens in the middle of the park. It is most convenient park to relax and enjoy your time

Where to stay in Paris

Each of the city’s 20 arrondissements, or districts, has a personality all its own. If you prefer high-end accommodations and to be in the middle of the action, look for lodging in the 1st through the 4th arrondissements. For more affordable lodging and access to major metro lines, try the 12th. The Oberkampf area of the 11th arrondissement has an edgier, more hip vibe. For easy access to tourist sites,  the 16th is within a stone’s throw of the Arc de Triomph and the Eiffel Tower, and the 17th is within walking distance to the Champs-Elysées. Avoid the 18th, 19th, and 20th, because these can be dangerous, especially if you’re not familiar with the city.
